Despite a checkered history over the last few decades, the Dallas Cowboys have firmly cemented themselves as America’s Team. A dynastic run through the league has etched its name in history.
As the head coach for the run that brought the team two Super Bowl rings, Jimmy Johnson should have been synonymous with the franchise. But over three decades later, he remains embroiled in a bitter feud with owner and general manager Jerry Jones.
Cowboys Legend Jimmy Johnson Brings Tangible Proof for His Claims
Being inducted into their Ring of Honor wasn’t enough to satiate Johnson’s demand for respect for his role during their transformational years.
As he won a Coach of the Year award and guided them to victory in Super Bowls 27 and 28, the credit remained split.
Jerry Jones claimed that he was instrumental in putting the roster together that supported the likes of Michael Irvin, Troy Aikman, and Deion Sanders. But Johnson has repeatedly argued his role in the matter.
Officially designated as the coach and general manager of the Cowboys from 1989 to 1993, Johnson believes he was the mastermind behind their back-to-back championships. Even as the dispute between the two sides continued, Johnson finally played his trump card.
Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr., who’s been in the role for nearly 30 years himself, revealed, “The Cowboys are not happy with this post,” referring to the image shared by the former national champion.

Johnson captioned his post with the words: “Does this explain the Cowboys’ responsibilities?” The image outlined the exact terms of his contract and the definition of his role with the organization during his time there.
In the contract, three specific points are explicitly mentioned: “(1) No assistant football coach, trainer, equipment man or strength coach shall be fired or employed by Employer without the prior approval of Johnson.
“(2) Johnson shall have the right of prior approval with respect to the acquisition, releasing and trading of all football players of the Dallas Cowboys.
“(3) Johnson shall have complete control of all assistant coaches, players, trainers and equipment men during training, practice, preparation for and the actual playing of games.”
As a result, Johnson is now bringing tangible proof of his role in not only coaching them to victory, but in putting together the roster as well.
It remains to be seen if the Cowboys, and in turn, Jones himself, offer any rebuttal about his stunt.
But after a relatively drama-free offseason in Dallas, this story threatens to take the focus away from football and the potentially excellent chance the Cowboys have to get back to the postseason and make some legitimate noise in the NFC.
