Jim Harbaugh’s Bold Justin Herbert Comment Has Chargers Fans Talking

Harbaugh has been especially encouraged by what he has seen from Herbert, and he made that clear during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” this week. Asked about Herbert’s progress, Harbaugh said the quarterback is in an excellent place across the board, praising the balance and composure he brings to the position.

One particular comment from Harbaugh about Herbert quickly went viral, and the Chargers’ official account wasted no time sharing it on social media.

“He said what he said,” the Chargers’ official page posted.

The quote sparked plenty of reactions from fans and media members.

“I’m gonna hate this for years, I know it,” Tyler Schoon, co-host of the “Guilty As Chargers Podcast,” wrote.

“Alright,” ESPN’s Kris Rhim wrote.

Harbaugh has never shied away from publicly praising Herbert, unlike many NFL head coaches who prefer to keep compliments for their quarterbacks to a minimum. His 2025 season gave Harbaugh even more reason for optimism, as his quarterback threw for 3,727 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Herbert also added 498 rushing yards and two scores on the ground, earning a 75.1 PFN QB Impact grade. After securing his second Pro Bowl selection following the 2025 season, he appears poised to take another step forward.

Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel recently praised the quarterback’s relentless work ethic, saying noting that Herbert’s commitment to improving every day has already positioned the team for success and that he stands above any quarterback McDaniel has previously coached.

Though the latest updates from Chargers camp have generated excitement, many still found Harbaugh’s viral remark a bit unusual.

“Harbaugh is a madman,” one fan said.

“I thought this was a fake post,” another remarked. “Legendary quote,” one added.

Harbaugh also confirmed that the Chargers’ starters, including Herbert, will play one series against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. It will give fans their first glimpse of the quarterback in preseason action.

If Herbert stays healthy, the partnership with McDaniel could pay immediate dividends. There is already a blueprint for quarterbacks thriving in the second year in his system. Former Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa earned his lone Pro Bowl selection during his second season under McDaniel.

With an accomplished coaching staff around Herbert and continued development, many believe he is well-positioned to enter the MVP conversation while helping the Chargers pursue a Super Bowl.
