WNBA fans react to former MVP Nneka Ogwumike announcing plans to retire after the 2026 season, honoring her incredible career.

Former MVP and 11-time All-Star Nneka Ogwumike has announced she will retire from the WNBA following the conclusion of the 2026 season.

The news sent waves across the basketball community, with fans celebrating her legendary career and expressing how deeply she will be missed on the court.

WNBA Fans React as Former MVP Nneka Ogwumike Announces Retirement After 15 Seasons

Ogwumike is straight-up WNBA royalty. Coming out of Stanford as an absolute force, she got picked first overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2012 Draft. She hit the ground running immediately, taking home Rookie of the Year.

2016 was her real crown jewel year. She earned the league MVP award and hit the game-winning shot to give LA the WNBA championship.

Fast forward through an 11-time All-Star career, a solid two-year stint with the Seattle Storm, and a highly anticipated return to the Sparks, the 36-year-old has firmly locked her name near the top of the all-time scoring and rebounding lists.

Off the court, she has been impressive as well. As president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), Ogwumike led the charge through massive collective bargaining deals that scored huge wins for players. She’s just a genuine, class-act leader.

So when the Underdog WNBA X account shared the news that Ogwumike is officially calling it a career after the 2026 season, fans were left gutted.

“Nneka Ogwumike announces retirement from WNBA effective after this season,” Underdog WNBA wrote on X.

One fan couldn’t hide their disappointment, wishing Ogwumike would stick around for a couple more seasons.

“Nooooo I thought she’s do at least one or two more to guide some incoming Sparks babies 😢😢 What a gem, will be missed !” they commented on the post.

Another user hailed her as one of the best to ever play the game, writing:

“One of the best to ever do it. Carrying the sparks day in day out”

A third fan pointed out that Ogwumike is still cooking on the court and easily has more gas left in the tank.

“She’s been cooking man, could easily play more but go out on top!” they wrote on X.

Another user admitted to being completely caught off guard by the announcement.

“One of the greats. I’m actually surprised because Nneka is still playing at such a high level,” they commented on the post.

One fan mentioned her fight as the WNBPA President and lauded her efforts, writing:

“Nneka Ogwumike fought for million dollar contracts for WNBA players and said she’s out after this season. Thats how you make an exit 👏”

Even in her final lap, Ogwumike isn’t just warming the bench. She’s still putting up solid numbers, averaging nearly 17 points and 9 rebounds a game for the Sparks.
