WNBA Breaks Silence on Sophie Cunningham’s Name Being Banned From League’s Subreddit Amid Trans-Athlete Controversy

The WNBA released a statement on whether the league was involved in Sophie Cunningham's name being banned from the r/WNBA subreddit.

Sophie Cunningham has become the most controversial figure in North American sports over the past few weeks. Her stance against trans athletes playing in women’s sports has sparked a great deal of controversy.

Lines have been drawn, and platforms such as the WNBA subreddit have decided the discourse might be getting out of hand.

WNBA Releases Statement on Sophie Cunningham’s Name Being Banned from League’s Subreddit

The r/WNBA subreddit has banned words like “Cunningham,” “Sophie,” “sc,” “scunningham,” “soph,” and “sophiacunningham.” This came as quite a shock to users, as they felt it was odd that they couldn’t discuss a WNBA player on the WNBA subreddit and that their freedom of speech was being stripped away.

After news of the ban went viral, this raised the question of whether the WNBA was involved. However, a league official has since come out and debunked this theory.

“The WNBA does not moderate or have any affiliation with the r/WNBA subreddit,” said the league’s statement.

A moderator of the r/WNBA subreddit recently explained the decision while responding to a user who questioned the ban.

“We filter content based on [Sophie] because it tends to bring out trolls and people that aren’t fans of the W,” the r/WNBA moderator wrote. “We have chosen to filter content. If you want to post freely about Sophie, you can go to a different sub.”

When the follower continued to press the issue, the mod gave them an ultimatum: “You aren’t even a contributor to this sub, so I suggest you go back to the other WNBA subs. This is our decision. If you keep messaging about this, you will be banned.”

On Monday, the WNBA subreddit released a statement clarifying that basketball discussions involving Cunningham are allowed: “Sophie Cunningham content is not banned from r/wnba. Posts about Sophie are welcome when they are related to basketball, including games, highlights, interviews, statistics, marketing endorsements, and other WNBA-related news. Off-court Sophie content can be shared as well.”

However, they also added a new requirement that only users with 50 “karma” points to post so that “the subreddit will not be over-ran with trolls or brigaded.”

“And this goes for ANY new post; you must have 50 community karma to create ANY post,” they added.

While this seems like quite a drastic measure, it does showcase just how out of control the Cunningham discourse has gotten. Any time the Indiana Fever play a game, Cunningham’s trans-athlete stance is a major talking point, with rallies even being held before games.

Multiple WNBA stars, including Caitlin Clark, have said that they want the WNBA discourse to focus on the on-court product rather than on these divisive controversies and drama.

The fact that the WNBA even had to release a statement distancing itself from the r/WNBA subreddit is quite interesting. However, they have yet to address the overarching issue at hand.

Unlike the WTA or the UCI, the W is still meeting to determine its eligibility rules and whether it will allow trans athletes to play in the league.

Expect the league to make its stance known in the near future, as the noise doesn’t show any sign of quieting down.
