Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown is among the high-profile players set to become eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the first time in 2027. While Brown’s off-field controversies may influence voter opinions regarding his candidacy, former All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy believes he deserves first-ballot entry.
He went as far as ranking Brown over three-time Super Bowl champion Jerry Rice, sparking immediate backlash across the NFL community.

The list of first-time eligible candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2027 includes Brown, Rob Gronkowski, Ben Roethlisberger, Adrian Peterson, Richard Sherman, Cam Newton, Le’Veon Bell, Andrew Whitworth, Alex Mack, Gerald McCoy, and Eric Weddle.
On paper, Brown’s accolades make for a strong case: Super Bowl LV champion, two-time NFL receiving yards leader, four-time First-Team All-Pro, seven-time Pro Bowler, and a member of the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
However, McCoy took the discussion in a completely different direction during the latest episode of the “Speakeasy” podcast, where he made a bold comparison between Brown and Rice.
“It might sound crazy. But Jerry Rice or AB? I’m taking AB,” McCoy said.
Co-host Emmanuel Acho looked on in utter disbelief as the rest of the panelists were taken by surprise, but the former Philadelphia Eagles star held his ground.

“What am I saying wrong?” McCoy added. “What can Jerry Rice do that AB can’t do?”
The NFL world had plenty of things to say to McCoy for his Brown vs. Rice claim.

“Further proof that just because you played the game at a high level does not mean you will have the smartest and most insightful opinions on every topic related to your sport,” ESPN’s Michael Eaves wrote.
NFL analyst Mitchell Renz struck a similar tone, tweeting, “Another example. Just because you played in a league doesn’t mean you know the league or can talk about it.”

Rice’s resume represents the gold standard. He holds the NFL record for receiving yards after turning 30, a figure that, on its own, exceeds Brown’s entire career output. Brown spent 12 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, finishing with 928 receptions for 12,291 yards.
Given the enormous gap in longevity and overall production, McCoy’s comparison generated huge disbelief.
“Shady [expletive] take,” Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr. wrote.
“This is CTE,” journalist Dawn Montgomery wrote on X.
While Brown was unquestionably one of the most dominant receivers of his generation, his controversial end in Tampa Bay and off-field legal issues since leaving the NFL are expected to heavily weigh on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee when his eligibility opens in 2027.
