Over the last few weeks, one of the biggest issues plaguing the WNBA has been the trans-athlete eligibility debate. Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham sparked the discussion last month by sharing her stance against the issue.
Other players, coaches, and even media members have weighed in on the debate. One analyst has now pointed out a direct double standard that runs counter to what Cunningham has been trying to portray.
Analyst Calls Out Sophie Cunningham Over Double Standard Amid Trans-Athlete Debate
Comments about the exclusion of the transgender community from women’s sports have become a major political issue. There have even been rallies outside Fever games, with fans both in favor of and against the issue protesting.
Making an appearance on “The Colin Cowherd Podcast,” Fox Sports analyst Danny Parkins explained that there were some clear inconsistencies with Cunningham’s comments. He even pointed to instances where he believed the Fever guard was being hypocritical.
“I thought Katie Nolan made a great point. You showed up at a UFC fight with the President [Dana White], who has hit his wife on camera, or Conor McGregor, who has been accused of sexual assault.” As a result, he concluded, “Your North Star isn’t protecting women in all cases.”
Continuing, Parkins added, “It’s just this particular issue, that again, is a lightning rod issue that has, I don’t know if it’s launched careers, but it certainly has helped some people become very influential in the right-wing media commentator, grifter space.”
For the veteran analyst, the issue wasn’t a major concern, at least at the professional level. While acknowledging anecdotal accounts at the local level, Parkins wasn’t convinced it was a real problem for the WNBA to tackle.
“I personally don’t get the sense that we are at anywhere near like a tipping point or an inflection point where one of the 20 biggest issues facing our country is gonna be trans athletes coming into women’s sports and taking spots away from girls playing sports on a fair level.”
It remains to be seen if it becomes a legitimate issue for the WNBA. But given the rising noise around the situation, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has already issued a memo to assemble a task force to tackle the issue.
Comprising team presidents and general managers, the group will convene to reach a consensus on the trans-athlete issue that has been thrust into the spotlight. It will be interesting to see their verdict, but for the time being, we have to wait for a formal decision.
