A heartwarming celebration of some of the game’s greatest players came about at the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony. After the esteemed class of Larry Fitzgerald, Adam Vinatieri, Luke Kuechly, Roger Craig, and Drew Brees joined the sport’s most prestigious group, the attention turned to next year’s class.
A loaded group of first-time eligible players got the football world talking. But for a lot of the NFL fan base, one name was quickly rejected: Cam Newton.
NFL Fans Aren’t Buying Cam Newton as a Hall of Famer
The class of first-year eligible players, as highlighted by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, includes Rob Gronkowski, Ben Roethlisberger, Adrian Peterson, Richard Sherman, Cam Newton, Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell, Andrew Whitworth, Alex Mack, Gerald McCoy, and Eric Weddle.
It is a stacked class, and fans were quick to pencil in Gronkowski as a surefire selection. However, the opinion wasn’t so bright for Newton, despite a trip to the Super Bowl and an MVP on his resume.

As one fan pointed out, “Cam Newton played 11 seasons and had 3 winning records.”
Another went through the list and believed Newton has no chance: “Ben, Gronk and Whit will get in next year. They’ll make AP wait. Antonio Brown and Cam are never getting in.”
A Heisman Trophy winner for Auburn in 2010, he led the team to victory in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game.

He was selected by the Carolina Panthers as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and immediately put together a spectacular rookie campaign. After setting the single-season record for quarterback rushing touchdowns, he earned the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

From that point forward, there was no looking back for Newton, as he led the Panthers to four playoff appearances, three of them consecutive (2013–2015), including a trip to Super Bowl 50 (the same season he won NFL MVP).
Unfortunately, injuries derailed his career, to the point that media members like Jarrett Bailey of SB Nation also claimed, “Ben, Gronk, and Peterson are the without a doubters. AB is a first-ballot talent, but he won’t get in next year. Cam Newton isn’t a HOF player, let’s stop with that.”

After the 2017 season, he ended up starting 36 more games, going 14-22 in those contests.
Spending a season with the New England Patriots before having a final swan song in Carolina, the extremely small sample size of his peak holds him back.
As one fan concluded, “Cam newton is not HOF to me. Hall of very good.” It remains to be seen what next year’s class will look like, but it’s clear plenty of NFL fans don’t view Newton as a Hall of Famer.
