‘I Don’t Know if He Cares’ — Bill Simmons Casts Doubt on Travis Kelce After ‘Big Wedding’ With Taylor Swift

Bill Simmons doubted Travis Kelce's motivation after his wedding to Taylor Swift, but the Chiefs TE's strong training camp tells a different story.

Travis Kelce married Taylor Swift on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in arguably the wedding of the decade. Over a thousand people attended the event, which drew celebrities from every corner of the entertainment and sports industries.

Less than a month later, Kelce reported to Missouri Western State University for his 14th NFL training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bill Simmons Questions Travis Kelce’s Focus as Chiefs Prepare for 2026 Season

Kelce’s 2025 season was productive by any measure, but by his lofty standards, it was viewed as a down year. He caught 76 passes for 851 yards and 5 touchdowns across 17 games, leading the Chiefs in all three categories while extending his streak of 800-plus receiving yard seasons to 12.

According to PFN’s TE Impact Metric, Kelce posted an impact score of 80.6, ranking fifth in the league. Despite that, Kansas City finished 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era after losing the star quarterback to a torn ACL in Week 15.

With Mahomes healthy and the roster revamped around him, there’s genuine optimism that the Chiefs can contend again.

Star running back Kenneth Walker III arrived in free agency to bolster the backfield, while Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Tyquan Thornton form a promising wide receiver group. Moreover, rookie wideout Cyrus Allen has already impressed everyone in training camp and is expected to contribute during the season, which will make Kelce’s job easier.

However, Bill Simmons still has doubts about Kelce’s motivation for the upcoming season, given the tight end’s eventful offseason.

“I don’t know if his eye is on the prize,” Simmons said. “He just had a wedding with 1,200 people. I don’t know if he cares about the season. Big wedding, I don’t know. I don’t know where his head’s at.”

History suggests athletes sometimes lose focus after major life events off the field, but Kelce’s decision to return undercuts that theory. He mulled retirement for two consecutive offseasons before signing an extension in March.

If the 36-year-old tight end didn’t have gas left in the tank, he could have walked away into one of the most comfortable retirements in sports history. More importantly, his visible engagement in the training camp shows he is ready to contribute at the level the team expects of him.

Kelce is already a future Hall of Famer with three Super Bowl rings and 11 Pro Bowl selections. Winning another Super Bowl to end his career is the ultimate goal for him, especially after the way the last two seasons have ended for the Chiefs.

Given how motivated the entire Chiefs organization appears to be with Mahomes back, dismissing Kelce because of a wedding feels premature.

How the offense ultimately looks with Mahomes returning from a major knee injury alongside Walker, Rice, Worthy, Thornton, and Allen will determine far more than whether Kelce is dealing with post-wedding distractions.
