Mike Tomlin opens his broadcasting career Thursday night at the same Canton stadium where he opened his head coaching career. Nineteen years and one Lombardi Trophy later, he is back, without a headset.
Tomlin makes his NBC debut as a studio analyst on Football Night in America, which airs on location from Canton at 7 p.m. ET before the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals kick off the 2026 preseason at 8.
Mike Tomlin’s NBC Debut Lands Where His Steelers Run Started
The symmetry is not manufactured. Tomlin’s first game in charge of the Pittsburgh Steelers was the 2007 preseason opener in Canton, an Aug. 5 win over New Orleans, 20-7, at the stadium that now carries Tom Benson’s name. He was 35 and replacing a franchise institution in Bill Cowher, and the only part of that night he called unfamiliar afterward was doing a live interview moments before kickoff.
Thursday’s show puts him alongside host Maria Taylor and analysts Jason Garrett, Devin McCourty and Mike Florio, with Mike Tirico and Cris Collinsworth handling the game itself. “I’m humbled and honored to come alongside the best group in sports,” Tomlin said when NBC announced the hire in April.

Most of the coverage of that hire reached for the Cowher parallel, and it is an easy one. Cowher left Pittsburgh after the 2006 season, took a chair at CBS and never went back. But Cowher walked away at 49 with a single year of team control on the books, let it lapse and never used the runway. Tomlin’s window runs longer than that.

Tomlin resigned on Jan. 13, one day after a 30-6 wild-card loss to Houston, with a year still left on the three-year extension he signed in June 2024 and a club option for 2027 attached to it. Because he stepped down instead of getting fired, Pittsburgh keeps his coaching rights, and any team that wants him on a sideline before the end of the 2027 season has to work out compensation with the Steelers first, at least under the reporting on his deal.
That is not a technicality, and the price is negotiable. Denver sent New Orleans a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-rounder, getting a third back, to pry Sean Payton out of the Fox studio after one year away. Tampa Bay got Bruce Arians out of a CBS booth for a sixth-round pick. The list of coaches who took a television job and stayed gone is a lot shorter than the list who used it as a runway.
The resume still travels. Tomlin went 193-114-2 in the regular season, tying Chuck Noll for the most wins in franchise history, and he never finished a year under .500, which the Elias Sports Bureau charts as the longest such streak to open a head coaching career in league history. He won Super Bowl XLIII and got back to the game two years later.

The postseason record is the counterargument, and it is a loud one. Tomlin finished 8-12 in the playoffs, lost his final seven postseason games and had not won one since the 2016 season. Owners hire for floor as often as ceiling, though, and nobody available next January offers a higher one.
So watch what he actually says Thursday and on the Sundays after it. Tomlin is 54, under contract to a network and effectively still under contract to a team, and every honest opinion he offers about a struggling quarterback or a shaky staff is going to get read twice, once as analysis and once as an application. Florio, who has worked with him already, thinks fans will like how direct he is. The rest of the league will be listening for something else.
