The Washington Commanders signed four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Stefon Diggs to a one-year deal worth up to $12 million on Wednesday. The Commanders had been linked to several notable free agents, including polarizing San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, but they opted to sign Diggs.
Adam Schefter Reveals Suitors for Stefon Diggs
During Thursday’s segment of “The Pat McAfee Show,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that several teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, tried to sign Diggs before he joined the Commanders.
“The Chiefs reached out at one point,” Schefter said. “The Dolphins reached out, the Raiders reached out. He had some conversations with some teams, but I think it was gonna be Washington all along for Stefon Diggs. It just made too much sense. Especially like, I think, at one point, Washington was definitely considering Brandon Aiyuk, and a lot of people thought that would get done.”
“And then there were a bunch of social media posts… that helped create the opportunity for Stefon Diggs and Washington,” Schefter added. “Diggs wanted to go to Washington, maybe KC, but Washington made the most sense.”

Alongside influential quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is working his way back to full fitness, the Chiefs’ receiving corps has been depleted by injuries. Rashee Rice underwent a cleanup surgery on his right knee, which kept him out of action as he served a 30-day jail sentence.
On the other hand, Xavier Worthy sustained a shoulder sprain during the Chiefs’ training camp session on Saturday. Worthy was plagued by a similar injury after a collision with Travis Kelce in Week 1 last season.
Rookie wide receiver Cyrus Allen, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, also sustained a shin bruise after colliding with a teammate during a practice session last week.
The Chiefs’ uncertainty at wide receiver has fueled their desperate search in the market, and Diggs joining the Commanders has removed another target from the board for coach Andy Reid.
Diggs has been dogged by off-field legal troubles all year, escaping assault and battery charges in May, and is currently facing sexual assault accusations by a social media influencer.
After an unproductive season with the Houston Texans in 2024, Diggs resurrected his career with the New England Patriots in 2025. He earned a PFN WR Impact score of 82.9, No. 7 in the NFL, after tallying 1,013 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns on 85 catches.
