Jason Whitlock has never been one to hold back his opinion on the WNBA, and the ongoing Sophie Cunningham storyline gave him another reason to speak up today. As the Indiana Fever prepared to face the Minnesota Lynx, Whitlock offered a theory that goes well beyond basketball.
He laid out his take in a post on X just hours before tipoff, and it did not take long to spread.

Whitlock has spent the past several days arguing that the controversy surrounding Cunningham’s comments on transgender athletes has been overblown, and in some cases outright manufactured, by the league itself.
On Sunday, before Indiana faced Minnesota in a matchup between two of the WNBA’s highest scoring teams, he tied that theory directly to the day’s game.

The game certainly proved to be another classic night for both Caitlin Clark and Olivia Miles. The Lynx took a 108-100 win in Minneapolis thanks to a 28-point game from Miles. Clark didn’t have the best of games, managing to only put up 19 points at 8-18 shooting. But Kelsey Mitchell was the star of the night for the Fever with 37 points.
The comment builds on remarks Whitlock made earlier in the week, when he suggested that a confrontation between Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton and two teenage Cunningham supporters at a game in Seattle appeared staged. Whitlock pointed to the timing of the incident and the profile of everyone involved, calling it “like a movie script.”
The WNBA has since suspended Keaton for five home games and issued her an undisclosed fine over the incident.
Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve addressed the growing attention around the topic during a press availability Saturday, calling for a more level-headed conversation and pushing back on the idea that transgender athletes represent a major problem in women’s sports.
Cunningham herself addressed the rallies publicly for the first time on Friday, thanking the people who had shown up to support her stance outside recent road games. She has continued to stand by her original comments throughout the past two weeks, even as the reaction to them has grown louder on both sides.
Whitlock, for his part, has made clear he intends to keep pushing his theory that the league is leaning into the drama rather than trying to defuse it.
