Senators’ Dressing Room ‘Might Be In A Better Spot’ Without Brady Tkachuk, Argues Insider

NHL insider Ryan Dixon believes the Ottawa Senators' locker room could benefit after Brady Tkachuk's departure to the Panthers.

Trading away a franchise player is rarely easy, especially when that player happens to be Brady Tkachuk. The former Ottawa Senators captain was the emotional leader of the team, one of its top scorers, and one of the NHL’s most physical forwards.

But according to Sportsnet insider Ryan Dixon, Tkachuk’s departure to the Florida Panthers may have brought one unexpected benefit to the organization.

Could the Senators Be Better Without Brady Tkachuk?

Dixon believes Ottawa’s locker room could actually be in a healthier place now that months of speculation surrounding Tkachuk’s future have finally come to an end.

Speaking about the Senators’ offseason, Dixon pointed to the uncertainty that surrounded the team throughout much of the year. “Ottawa is another Atlantic Division team that, like Detroit, has seen its fair share of significant change in the off-season, with former captain Brady Tkachuk being dealt to the Florida Panthers,” Dixon said.

“By no means should the Sens be written off, as the dressing room might even be in a better spot with Tkachuk, and the endless, distracting conversations about his future, now on another club. Still, it’s hard to say this team is definitively moving forward after two straight seasons of making the playoffs via the wild card,” he added.

Much of the speculation intensified after the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, where Brady Tkachuk helped Team USA win the gold medal while playing alongside his brother, Matthew Tkachuk.

Rumors quickly spread that Brady wanted to reunite with his brother in Florida, and questions about his future became a regular topic of discussion in Ottawa.

By trading Tkachuk, general manager Steve Staios eliminated that uncertainty and allowed the organization to focus entirely on the future.

The move could also create opportunities for a new generation of leaders. Players such as Tim Stützle, Jake Sanderson, and Thomas Chabot are now expected to take on even bigger roles within the organization.

Of course, improving the atmosphere in the locker room does not automatically make the team better on the ice.

The Senators have reached the playoffs through the Eastern Conference wild-card race in each of the past two seasons, and expectations are even higher heading into 2026–27.

The front office has already added players such as William Eklund and Andre Burakovsky, but Staios recently hinted that more moves could be on the way. “We feel good about the work that we’ve done. There will be a secondary push that we will stay close to,” Staios said.

For Ottawa, the Brady Tkachuk era has officially come to an end. Whether the Senators are ultimately better because of it remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the focus has shifted entirely to what comes next.
