Michael Holley Didn’t Like Deion Sanders Visiting Shedeur Sanders in Camp

During Friday’s segment of the “Pro Football Talk” show, analyst Michael Holley criticized Coach Prime’s visit to the Browns’ training camp base to talk to Monken about his son.

“It should end in high school,” Holley said about the parents of a player meeting with the coach. “What are we doing? I don’t think it’s best for Shedeur Sanders. I don’t think it’s best for the Cleveland Browns to have the quarterback’s dad come in and say, ‘I wanna have a conversation with you about how to motivate my son.’ What’s the upside of that? It comes across as [if] you don’t trust the coaches who see him every day to figure it out.

“And if there’s something about… the Browns see that’s not clicking with Shedeur Sanders, I think they go to him and say, ‘Alright, you seem to be struggling in these situations against this type of coverage, or two-minute seems to be uncomfortable for you. Tell me why.’ They would figure it out… This is what they do. This is their livelihood.”

Shedeur initially committed to play for the Florida Atlantic Owls before flipping his commitment to the Jackson State Tigers after his father was named the school’s head coach in 2020. The quarterback and his brother, Shilo Sanders, followed Coach Prime when he embarked on his FBS journey with the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023.

Sanders played his entire college football career under his father’s tutelage, helping revive the Buffaloes from a 1-11 record in 2022 to a 9-4 record in his final season in 2024. In many circles, Shedeur’s shocking slide from a potential top-10 pick to the No. 144 selection was due to Coach Prime’s interference in his NFL career before draft night.

In a clip posted on X during his visit to Cleveland, Coach Prime revealed why he came to his son’s training camp.

“He [Shedeur] called me and texted me and told me, sent me the schedule,” Deion Sanders said. “So, when he sends me the schedule, that means, in his voice, ‘Dad, I want you to come see me.’ I ain’t get that text last year, but I got it this year. So what does a father do? Come see his baby because I don’t know when I’m gonna see him again.”

Sanders climbed the depth chart in Cleveland and established himself as the Browns’ QB1 last season, leading the team to a 3-4 record as a starter. He earned a PFN QB Impact score of 63.0, the second-worst in the NFL after registering 1,400 passing yards on 56.6% completion, 7 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
