Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy’s wife, Mia Bieniemy, was reportedly shot by their son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, at their family home in Virginia on Sunday. Loudoun County, Virginia, police confirmed that she was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, but was in stable condition.
Andy Reid Sympathizes with Eric Bieniemy’s Wife
After Monday’s practice session, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid sympathized with his offensive coordinator and his wife after the harrowing ordeal.
“She’s a saint, you know, we all know that, the people that know her. One of God’s good blessings right there now, really special person,” Reid said about Mia. “So, but things happen, you know, things happen and you just, you got to work through it. So, that’s where we’re at right now, and time will have to be involved in this to help heal a little bit. :
Reid added, “But it’ll all work out along the way. We all love EB, and I hate seeing these kinds of things happen, but there’s always a blessing in there somewhere, and so I know things will work out. Eric will work through it. He’s got a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and then we’ll just let time take care of it from there.

According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator’s 27-year-old son, Elijah, “was arrested and charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Discharge of a Firearm Inside of a Dwelling. He was transported to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center where he was held without bond.”

ESPN’s Nate Taylor reported that Chiefs pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier would take over Bieniemy’s offensive coordinator duties.
“Andy Reid said there’s no timetable on Eric Bieniemy’s return to the team. Reid said Joe Bleymaier, the Chiefs’ pass game coordinator, will take over the OC duties,” Taylor wrote.
Reid hired Bieniemy as the Chiefs’ running back coach in 2013 and eventually promoted him to offensive coordinator in 2018. He immediately turned the Chiefs’ offense into one of the league’s most lethal, and they were No. 1 in yards per game and points scored, scoring the third-most points in a season (565) in NFL history in 2018.
Under Bieniemy’s tutelage, Patrick Mahomes flourished, and they won their first Super Bowl in 2019 after beating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. They repeated that feat in 2022 when the Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Bieniemy left to become the Washington Commanders’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator in 2023 and the UCLA Bruins’ associate head coach and offensive coordinator in 2024. He spent 2025 as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach before returning to Kansas in January 2026.
