‘She Really Struggled’ — WNBA Exec States Cathy Engelbert’s ‘Ultimate Achilles’ Heel’ With the Commissioner’s Job In Danger

WNBA executives question Cathy Engelbert’s leadership amid fractured relationships, raising doubt about her future as commissioner.

Cathy Engelbert took over the WNBA seven years ago as the league’s first appointed commissioner. When she assumed the role, her pressing task was to build a league with stable capital that could expand and develop.

While the WNBA experienced unprecedented financial growth and expansion during her tenure, with 15 teams and a valuation exceeding $5 billion, significant behind-the-scenes issues could threaten her position as questions about leadership stability grow louder.

Cathy Engelbert Faces Mounting Pressure From WNBA Execs Over Leadership Lapses

The 2026 season marked the WNBA’s 30th anniversary, but despite record-breaking TV ratings and packed arenas, mounting tension from communication lapses with key stakeholders has reached a boiling point.

League insiders suggest that while Engelbert remains the driving force behind the business, her approach to managing interpersonal relationships has become her biggest roadblock.

“I think Cathy’s ultimate Achilles’ heel will be just relationships, or lack of, with a lot of key stakeholders… In that role, you need to be able to build strong relationships and give and take, and I think she really struggled with that,” said a WNBA team executive.

Sources across the league indicate that, even after nine months of promising to address leadership concerns, the commissioner has struggled to build sufficient social capital.

“I don’t see any change [since Collier’s comments],” one owner told ESPN. “I don’t think she’s learned significantly based on her failures.”

Another team executive said, “I do think Cathy thinks, well, she’s done her job. She got us financially set up the right way. It’s the other pieces that we’re talking about.”

These events unfold as the league may be experiencing its most politicized campaign. Following an on-court incident involving Caitlin Clark and Alyssa Thomas, both players faced intense scrutiny, raising concerns about the league’s policies for protecting its most valuable asset: the players.

On July 8, 2026, eleven U.S. House Republicans, led by Rep. August Pfluger (TX-11), sent a letter to Engelbert demanding answers about the on-court physical hostility directed at Clark and the officiating lapses.

If they fail to receive a positive outcome, it might trigger an investigation by the DOJ or the EEOC. As of now, despite the July 24 deadline, the WNBA has not issued a formal response, further adding to the case against the commissioner.

In a phone interview last week with ESPN, Engelbert said, “It’s easy to lead in good times. Where leaders really emerge in my experience … is when you’re your best in your darkest moments, and you don’t give up.”

“I’m focused head-down on executing this highly, highly successful 30th season,” Engelbert added. “I love this league. We’re going to continue to drive the business. And don’t worry about me. It’s more about the team … that’s what we’ve built here at the W. So, I’m really, really optimistic about where we’re going in the future.”

While critics continue to highlight persistent challenges in accessibility, transparency, and synergy between the league office and the franchises, Engelbert remains firm in her vision to execute this historic season successfully.

However, as stakeholders express frustration with her approach, navigating these internal dynamics will be crucial in determining whether she continues to lead the league forward.
