Coach Lane Kiffin became the talk of the sports world last year when he left Ole Miss for the LSU Tigers just before the Rebels’ College Football Playoff run. Kiffin’s messy exit from Oxford to Baton Rouge just before the playoffs sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts.
Kiffin’s exit also caused anxiety among Ole Miss stakeholders about whether the Rebels would be penalized by the College Football Playoff Committee on Selection Sunday.
Lane Kiffin Slams CFP Committee Selection Process
While speaking to reporters during the SEC Media Days on Thursday, Kiffin slammed the College Football Playoff Committee’s criteria for selecting the teams that are included in the 12-team field based on their records rather than their strength of schedule.
“If I would keep playing — we’re all in the same conference,” Kiffin said. “We keep playing each other. We don’t really prove that we’re better than anyone else, and we’re taking away out-of-conference games. I just think that it’s going to cause issues that we’ve already seen.
“Until we can get into a world where people can actually look at teams and say ‘That team that is 9-3 with their schedule is a better team than that 11-1 in a different conference,’ which now I think we aren’t even close to doing that, I think it causes a problem because we don’t have enough nonconference in our sport.”
Last season’s Selection Sunday was one of the most controversial in recent memory after the committee bumped the high-flying Notre Dame Fighting Irish in favor of the Miami Hurricanes.

After a 0-2 start to the season, including a loss to the Hurricanes, the Fighting Irish had won 10 consecutive games to sit on the playoff bubble on Selection Sunday. The Hurricanes were selected over the Fighting Irish because of their narrow 27-24 win in Week 1 of the season. After last season’s selection saga, Notre Dame will automatically make the 12-team field if they finish inside the top 12 of the final rankings.
On the other hand, Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter denied the charismatic Kiffin the chance to coach the Rebels at the College Football Playoff. Instead, Carter promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to head coach for the Rebels’ playoff run, during which they beat the Tulane Green Wave in the first round and the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl.
Golding’s Rebels fell agonizingly short of a national championship game appearance after losing 31-27 to the Hurricanes in the Fiesta Bowl.
After his high-profile Ole Miss exit, Kiffin is under immense pressure to return the LSU Tigers to elite status next season after overseeing one of the biggest roster flips in college football and bringing in the No. 5-ranked transfer portal class in the country.
