The takes about Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark are bordering on out of control. While Clark seems to be playing at a higher level in her third season, the scrutiny around the WNBA’s biggest star has only grown.
Clark has been upset with the way she has been officiated, leading her rabid fan base to come to her defense, often taking it too far. On the other hand, it has turned many against Clark simply because of that fan base.
Dave Portnoy Comes to Caitlin Clark’s Defense After Nancy Armour’s USA Today Article
“It shouldn’t need reminding this country has an awful history of Black people behing harmed, even killed, in the name of “defending” white women,” Armour wrote.
“The WNBA’s All-Star Game this weekend is in Chicago, Emmett Till’s hometown, and a local art gallery is currently hosting an exhibit imagining his life if he hadn’t been lynched. While it’s incumbent on the WNBA to do more to protect its players, there also should be an expectation on Clark to recognize the wider consequences of her actions.”

Although Armour’s point is no doubt important in society, it is asking a lot of Clark, who seemingly didn’t ask for any of this.
Barstool Sports’ Dave Portnoy immediately took to social media to give his thoughts on what Armour wrote.
“Congrats to USA Today’s Nancy Armour!” Portnoy responded. “She has written the dumbest paragraph not only of my lifetime but in the history of sports. This is an article that says @CaitlinClark22 arguing calls has become dangerous for the [WNBA] and civil rights. Nancy Armour should be out in a straight jacket and locked up. We can’t have these types of smooth brains roaming freely in society.”
Portnoy is a frequent defender of Clark, even calling out NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for his take on Clark being the face of the WNBA.
Clark has exploded lately. Legendary commentator Dick Vitale believes Clark should be treated “like royalty,” while her own coach, Stephanie White, has had it with some of Clark’s fans, even asking them to tone it down.
White said, “You know who is also happy after ANY win? CC. This is a team full of people who celebrate and care for one another, and like all of them, she’s a great teammate. We all cannot wait to have CC back on the court. Enough with this ridiculous narrative.”
Obviously, Clark can’t prevent fans and journalists from giving their takes, so this is tough terrain for the former Iowa Hawkeye.
The off-the-court talk about Clark has also really made her on-court play go under the radar.
Clark is averaging 21.0 points, 7.9 assists, and 3.8 rebounds in 29.2 minutes per game this season. Clark had perhaps her best game of the season in a 123-88 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday night. Clark scored 27 points and dished out 11 assists.
All-Star Weekend begins Friday night. Clark declined to participate in the three-point contest but will play in Saturday night’s game.
