Elias Pettersson’s name is swimming in the pools of speculation once again, but connecting him to the Pittsburgh Penguins is much easier than completing an actual deal.
Pittsburgh has the financial flexibility to entertain a blockbuster move, yet several obstacles stand between the team and the Vancouver Canucks star. These hurdles prompted one Penguins insider to describe a scenario so specific that it may ultimately keep the trade from ever materializing.
Pittsburgh Insider Reveals the Only Path to an Elias Pettersson Trade
Pettersson’s future in Vancouver remains one of the NHL’s biggest talking points despite widespread uncertainty over whether a trade is realistic. While multiple insiders have linked the Penguins to the star center, The Athletic’s Josh Yohe believes Pittsburgh would only move forward under extremely favorable conditions.
Responding to a fan question in a recent mailbag, Yohe explained that the Penguins’ interest comes with significant conditions attached.
“I think they would [move for Pettersson], but only if they could acquire him for next to nothing and the Vancouver Canucks would agree to cover a substantial amount of his contract,” Yohe wrote. He quickly cast doubt on that possibility, adding, “Is that scenario likely? I doubt it.”
Yohe also pointed to another major complication that could end discussions before they truly begin. “Everything I’ve heard suggests that Pettersson has no interest in leaving Vancouver,” he wrote, pointing to the player’s reported reluctance to move despite growing trade chatter.
Pettersson has six years remaining on his contract, carrying an $11.6 million average annual value, and Pittsburgh reportedly wants Vancouver to retain a meaningful portion of that salary.
Bringing the cap hit closer to the $7 million to $8 million range would make the gamble much easier to sanction for general manager Kyle Dubas, but such a move would undermine Vancouver’s goal of creating long-term cap flexibility.
The Penguins do have reasons to explore the possibility.
With significant cap space available, Dubas has searched for an impact player capable of extending the team’s competitive window alongside Sidney Crosby. A return to Pettersson’s previous elite form would immediately strengthen Pittsburgh’s long-term outlook.
Still, other factors continue to work against a blockbuster. Pettersson’s reported lack of interest in leaving Vancouver, combined with his contractual protection, limits the Canucks’ leverage while making negotiations even more complicated.
Unless Vancouver dramatically lowers both its asking price and Pettersson’s financial burden, Yohe’s assessment suggests Pittsburgh will likely remain on the sidelines.

For now, the Penguins appear willing to stay disciplined rather than force a blockbuster that fails to meet their long-term vision.
