Canucks Trade Rumors: As Kings Bow Out, Western Conference Team Emerges in Elias Pettersson Sweepstakes

The Vancouver Canucks aren’t rushing toward a decision on Elias Pettersson, but the market around the franchise center is beginning to sort itself out. One potential destination has quietly disappeared, while another emerges as league executives weigh the cost of acquiring elite talent.

Every new development is narrowing the field, setting up what could become one of the biggest trade stories of the summer.

Seattle Gains Ground After Kings Exit Elias Pettersson Race

The Los Angeles Kings are no longer viewed as a legitimate landing spot for Pettersson after preliminary discussions failed to develop into meaningful negotiations.

The organization explored the possibility of replacing longtime captain Anze Kopitar down the middle, but the combination of salary cap limitations and Vancouver’s steep asking price ultimately pushed Los Angeles out of the conversation.

Pettersson is entering the third year of his eight-year, $92.8 million contract, carrying an $11.6 million annual cap hit through the 2031-32 season. After adding experienced veterans, including Mats Zuccarello, Erik Haula, Corey Perry, and Scott Laughton, the Kings have less than $2 million in available cap space.

Creating enough room would have required clearing nearly $10 million in salary unless Vancouver agrees to retain a significant portion of Pettersson’s contract.

The financial hurdle was only part of the equation. Reports indicated the Canucks were unimpressed with the trade package Los Angeles was willing to assemble, making it clear Vancouver had no interest in moving its star center at a slashed price despite his 51-point season.

This leaves the Seattle Kraken in a far stronger position than most of the remaining suitors. The organization has both the cap flexibility and the motivation to pursue a high-impact offensive centerpiece capable of changing the complexion of its lineup.

Speaking on Inside Sports, NHL insider David Pagnotta pointed to the factor that could ultimately decide everything. “We know that the Kraken would like to make a splash at some point. Does that mean it’s Elias Pettersson, and if that’s their focal point, is he willing to waive to go there?”

Pettersson’s full no-movement clause gives him complete authority over any trade destination, meaning Seattle’s interest only matters if the Canucks forward is willing to approve the move.

The Kraken reportedly view Pettersson as the type of elite play-driving center who could transform both their top six and their struggling power play.

Vancouver also appears willing to retain part of Pettersson’s cap hit to help facilitate a blockbuster. Pagnotta earlier said, “There is a belief now with a new GM in place in Vancouver that there’s a little bit of an appetite to retain on that deal,” although no deal appears imminent.
