Martina Navratilova, Maria Sharapova Overcome With Emotion As Linda Nosková Honors Her Late Mother

Nosková defeated compatriot Karolína Muchová 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 in the women’s singles final on Saturday to clinch her first Grand Slam title. The Czech tennis star defeated five seeded players en route to the trophy, showcasing immense grit in the face of challenge.

After her triumph, Nosková paid tribute to her late mother and thanked her for her role in her success. Her mother, Ivana Nosková, passed away on the eve of the Wimbledon Championships in July 2024 after a long battle with cancer.

“There’s one more person I would like to thank, which is my mom. I definitely would not be standing here without her. So thank you,” Nosková said during the post-match trophy ceremony.

“I don’t usually cry; this is not like me. I have enjoyed these two weeks immensely. All the tears of sorrow, all the tears of joy, all the sweat and blood it took to get here… it was all worth it. I will never forget these two weeks,” she added.

Navratilova and Kvitová were left in tears during Nosková’s speech, while Billie Jean King and Maria Sharapova were also visibly emotional as the newly crowned Wimbledon champion paid her tribute.

Born in a small village in the Vsetín region in the Czech Republic, Nosková received immense support from her parents as she attempted to forge her path in tennis. They encouraged her to participate in several different sports, and Ivana played a crucial role in her early-career training.

Nosková enjoyed a remarkable grass-court swing, winning the Berlin Tennis Open before arriving at Wimbledon. She continued her fine form at the All England Club, dropping just two sets en route to the final.

This remarkable run earned her a place among the select group of Czech women to win a Grand Slam singles title, joining Kvitová, Barbora Krejčíková, and Markéta Vondroušová, among others. Also worth noting is the legacy of Wimbledon’s most decorated champion, nine-time singles winner Navratilova, who was born and raised in Prague before going on to represent the United States.

Having clinched a first-ever Grand Slam title, Nosková finds herself up to seventh place in the WTA rankings. This is a career-high rank for the young player, boosting her chances of continuing her exemplary run of form going into the US Open.
