Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and pop superstar Taylor Swift tied the knot in one of the year’s most anticipated and extravagant weddings on July 3 at Madison Square Garden.
With more than 1,000 high-profile guests in attendance, the celebration required an extensive security operation. While some criticized the couple for relying on public resources to secure their private event, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has revealed that the 14-time Grammy winner personally covered the cost of the additional police presence.

Kelce and Swift tried to keep both the venue and wedding date under wraps for as long as possible, with guests reportedly required to sign NDAs. However, Mamdani had hinted weeks earlier that Madison Square Garden would host the wedding over the Fourth of July weekend, largely because of the security planning involved.
With some of the biggest names from Hollywood and the NFL in attendance, security became one of the wedding’s top priorities. Several streets surrounding Madison Square Garden were temporarily closed, while the NYPD deployed additional officers and authorized overtime to keep the celebration secure.
Swift and Kelce faced criticism from some who accused them of using taxpayer-funded police resources for their private celebration, but those claims now appear unfounded.

During a consumer protection press conference on Friday, July 10, Mamdani was asked whether Swift would reimburse the city for the additional policing costs.
“Taylor Swift will be paying … has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” Mamdani said. “That was a permit that was finalized, I think, in just the days before the event itself.”

While the extensive security operation ultimately proved successful, the $160,000 permit cost was only a small fraction of the wedding’s overall price tag. According to the New York Post, the celebration cost an estimated $30 million or more, with floral arrangements and decor alone accounting for roughly $5 million.
The couple also reportedly donated nearly $26 million in donations to charities the United States.
Those expenses are relatively modest for Swift, whose net worth is estimated at $2.1 billion by Forbes. Kelce, meanwhile, is set to earn an average annual salary of $12 million from the Chiefs during the 2026 season.
Swift and Kelce began dating in 2023 after the singer’s Eras Tour stop at Arrowhead Stadium. They later announced their engagement in what became one of the most-liked Instagram posts of all time. Now, after one of the year’s most lavish and closely watched weddings, the couple has officially begun the next chapter of their lives together.
