‘Maybe Would’ve Veered a Little’ — Tom Brady Predicts How Rob Gronkowski Would’ve Fared Away from Patriots

Tom Brady explains why the Patriots' culture was key to Rob Gronkowski's legendary career and why another team may have seen him veer off the path to greatness.

Over 11 seasons together between New England and Tampa Bay, Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski formed one of the greatest quarterback-tight end duos of all time.

The pair won four Super Bowls together and forever etched their names in the NFL’s history books. However, according to Brady, Gronkowski’s career path may have looked slightly different had he been drafted somewhere other than Bill Belichick’s Patriots.

Tom Brady Says Patriots’ Culture Kept Rob Gronkowski From Veering off the Path to Greatness

Speaking on the “New Heights” podcast hosted by Super Bowl champions Travis and Jason Kelce, Brady explained why he believes the Patriots’ culture instilled by Belichick’s staff was instrumental in keeping the future Hall of Fame tight end on track throughout his career.

“Gronk, you know how he is and how you see him anywhere, he’s one of the most authentic people you’ll ever be around,” Brady told the Kelce brothers.

Brady explained that Gronkowski’s fun-loving personality could have easily taken him down a different path had he landed with another organization after being selected in the second round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

“I think our environment kind of kept him really serious, which I think that’s probably a good thing for him in the end because I think if he was on another team where the coach let him get away with a lot of stuff, Gronk would have maybe veered a little that way. But our team kind of made him you know a little more confined,” Brady explained.

Those dynastic Patriots were known for their strict rules and commitment to winning, with Belichick and Brady leading the way.

Brady made it clear that Gronkowski still had a great time and injected energy and fun into the building. Instead of trying to change who Gronkowski was, Brady credited the Patriots’ culture with striking the right balance between allowing him to enjoy himself while also demanding accountability.

The comments offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the environment of one of the most dominant eras of football that a single team has ever endured. While Gronkowski often became the face of rowdy celebrations and unforgettable off-field moments, teammates frequently praised his work ethic and commitment once he put on the uniform and stepped out onto the field.

His commitment to winning cannot be overstated, despite all the fun Gronk appeared to have during his career, and the results speak for themselves.
From 2010 through 2018, Brady and Gronkowski were virtually unstoppable, winning three Super Bowls together in New England before winning a fourth in Tampa Bay in the 2020 season.

Brady called Gronkowski the greatest blocking tight end in history. Combine that with his elite pass-catching ability and the numbers to back it up, and suddenly you have a real argument for Gronk to be the most complete tight end in the NFL’s long history.

According to PFSN’s TE impact metrics, Gronkowski recorded the best season ever recorded for a tight end in 2011, his sophomore year. Gronkowski accumulated 1,327 yards on 90 receptions, including 17 touchdowns, which led the league, resulting in an impact score of 100.

Brady’s latest comments reinforced the fact that talent alone wasn’t enough to form the Patriots’ dynasty. The organization’s demanding culture helped transform gifted players into champions, and Brady believes Gronkowski is one of the clearest examples of that philosophy.

While Gronkowski undoubtedly possessed Hall of Fame ability and would have put up monster stats regardless of where he played, Brady isn’t convinced every franchise would have brought out the very best version of the larger-than-life tight end that the Patriots did.
