The Boston Celtics’ decision to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers is being discussed all around the NBA.
While many remain puzzled by this move, former Celtics center and 2008 NBA champion Kendrick Perkins believes the deal sends a powerful message about how Boston views its former star.
Kendrick Perkins Says Celtics Aren’t Worried
Brown leaves Boston after 10 seasons, an NBA championship, and a Finals MVP award. The Celtics received Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks in return.
However, Perkins believes the biggest story isn’t what the Celtics got back. Instead, he thinks the fact that they were willing to trade Brown to one of their biggest rivals is the main catch.
Appearing on First Take, Perkins criticized the Celtics’ front office and president of basketball operations, Brad Stevens, for trading Brown within the Atlantic Division.
“The message that was sent was from Brad Stevens and the Celtics is that we’ll catch you in traffic.”
Perkins explained that Boston’s decision to send Brown to Philadelphia speaks volumes about the organization’s confidence.
“To trade him in the same conference to a division rival… this is saying we don’t fear you.”
He went even further by suggesting the Celtics have no fear of seeing Brown across the court in future playoff battles.
Kendrick Perkins says Jaylen Browm SHOULD feel disrespected by the Celtics:

“No one is losing any sleep within that organization. None of his teammates are afraid that he’s in the same conference.”
Despite his criticism of the trade, Perkins made it clear that Brown’s achievement in Boston should not be overlooked.
“Everybody appreciate what he brought to the table since being drafted their NBA champion, NBA Finals MVP. I mean, I get all that.”
The trade closed the book on one of the most successful recent chapters in Celtics history. Brown finished his Boston career as the franchise’s longest-tenured player and ranks 10th on the team’s all-time scoring list.
He also entered the offseason after arguably the best individual season of his career.
In return, the Celtics gained future draft assets, including a 2028 first-round pick or pick swap and an unprotected 2031 first-round pick.
Still, many people have questioned the addition of Paul George. He has not been selected as an All-Star since the 2023-24 season and has played only 78 games over the past two seasons with the 76ers.

Boston has continued to reshape its roster by re-signing Neemias Queta and signing Mike Conley and Mitchell Robinson in free agency. It is still unclear if the team will make more moves.
But for sure, the next game between the Celtics and 76ers will be one to watch, as Brown gets his first chance to respond on the court.
