‘Absolute Vile Behavior’ — NFL World Reacts As Missouri Attorney General Investigates ESPN’s Matt Miller Amid Scam Allegations

Missouri's Attorney General is investigating ESPN's Matt Miller after a number of allegations surfaced that he scammed his followers.

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller was involved in a near-fatal car accident on June 17. He was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, and underwent a life-saving amputation of his left arm, along with surgeries for a compound femur fracture, a shattered kneecap, and multiple broken ribs.

His family launched a GoFundMe on June 25 to cover medical and rehabilitation costs, but it quickly drew scrutiny after a Reddit thread resurfaced documenting a pattern of complaints from participants in Miller’s fantasy football leagues.

People claimed Miller was unreachable when it came time to collect winnings or to confirm where the charitable portion was sent. Now, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office has confirmed to Awful Announcing that it has opened an investigation into Miller.

Matt Miller’s Fantasy Leagues and Charitable Ventures Will Be Investigated

Awful Announcing’s Ben Koo and Brendon Kleen spoke to at least seven people who described similar experiences with Miller’s fantasy football leagues, and the outlet has since heard from more than 40 additional individuals who have provided supporting evidence.

Awful Announcing’s Sam Neumann, in an article today, wrote, “The Missouri Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into ESPN NFL Draft analyst Matt Miller, confirming to Awful Announcing in a statement that it has ‘an open investigation into this issue.”

The fantasy platform Sleeper confirmed that the account linked to Miller served as commissioner for 91 leagues in the 2025 season alone before the platform permanently removed him.

Miller mentioned that his 417 Foundation, established in 2013, was inspired by his mother’s work with low-income preschoolers in Joplin, and that it handled all the charities he had promised. However, according to Awful Announcing, “public incorporation records instead show the foundation wasn’t formally established in Missouri until December 2018, and it received a cease-and-desist notice about a year later.”

Furthermore, the foundation hasn’t filed a Form 990, its website is inactive, and its social media stopped posting in 2021, though Miller was still promoting 417 Foundation fantasy leagues as of May 2022. There were also accusations that Miller ghosted some of his followers who paid for scouting lessons back in the day.

The news of an investigation being launched against Miller stunned the NFL world.

“What a wild series of events,” Jordan Zirm wrote on X.

Bill Ari, a freelance reporter, said, “Great work on this, absolutely vile behavior. I’ve already gotten suspended once for saying what should be done to Matt Miller so I’ll stop there. Cold place in hell for guys who scam as charities.”

One user wrote, “It literally went from ‘this is a tragedy’ to unveiling years of fantasy football fraud in what seemed like hours. Life comes at you fast.”

Another user added, “Charity fraud is utterly reprehensible and should never be tolerated.”

RotoBaller’s Brandon Murchison added, “Maybe ESPN can vet their potential employees a little better moving forward.”

Koo also revealed that, “The Missouri AG office says complaints can be filed online or by phone through the Consumer Protection team at 800-392-8222. They shared that they are looking for documented proof, such as messages and proof of PayPal, CashApp, and Venmo transactions.”

What complicates the situation further is the timing of Miller’s repayment activity. According to Awful Announcing’s reporting, evidence shows Miller began settling overdue balances in the days immediately following the GoFundMe launch.

Several complainants told Koo and Kleen that Miller had gone silent on them for months and only responded after they escalated their grievances directly to ESPN. So far, ESPN has not commented on any aspect of the situation despite multiple requests.

The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection division is now collecting complaints from anyone with relevant information, regardless of whether they live in Missouri. It opens the door for participants from across the country to file formal grievances.

With ESPN still silent, the state investigation is the first institutional pressure point that could shift this scandal. Miller’s position as one of the network’s primary draft voices heading into the 2027 cycle may directly be tied to what this investigation uncovers.
