‘Spewing Hatred’ — Ex-NFL LB Faces Intense Racist Backlash After Claiming WNBA Is ‘Better Off’ Without Caitlin Clark

Former NFL LB Emmanuel Acho faces racist backlash after claiming the WNBA would thrive without Caitlin Clark, sparking heated debate online.

The latest debate surrounding Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has quickly turned into another major talking point across the WNBA. Following Indiana’s dramatic 111-109 loss to the Phoenix Mercury, fresh criticism surfaced over how opponents defend Clark.

During the second quarter, Alyssa Thomas appeared to strike Clark in the throat before stepping over her as she lay on the floor, reigniting arguments about the physical treatment she receives.

Then, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho added even more fuel to the discussion with a controversial opinion.

Ex-NFL LB Emmanuel Acho Got Racially Abused for His Caitlin Clark Take

Reacting to the incident, Acho argued that the WNBA would actually be “better off” without Clark.

His comments immediately sparked heated reactions across social media, and before long, the former linebacker found himself facing an intense backlash from many Clark supporters.

Speaking on the recent “Speakeasy” podcast, Acho explained that the response had crossed a disturbing line.

“I’ve been called the n-word more times in the last 24 hours than I have in the last 24 years in defense of Caitlin Clark,” he said.

Acho then argued that the behavior from some people defending Clark was exactly why he believed the situation had become harmful.

“This is why I suggested that Caitlin Clark has been more detrimental than she has been an additive, not because of Caitlin Clark’s ability, because, those that have come to the defense of Caitlin Clark,” he added.

“I use that word loosely. Are spewing hatred, are spewing misogyny, are spewing racism, and that is detrimental to the W; it’s detrimental to society, and it’s detrimental to humanity.”

No one deserves to face racist abuse, and for that, Acho has our sympathy.

The whole controversy began after he declared, “The WNBA, at this junction in time, would be better off without Caitlin Clark because she is a bigger distraction than she is an additive.”

That statement quickly became one of the biggest talking points. However, Acho insisted his argument was about the league’s future rather than Clark’s talent.

“Now people are watching. Now, we realize there’s talent in the WNBA that’s actually even greater than Caitlin Clark… Caitlin got the necessary eyes there, but now that the eyes are there, we don’t necessarily need her anymore.”

Acho then pushed his argument even further with perhaps his most surprising claim.

“Caitlin Clark has gotten the WNBA players past the proverbial Red Sea. Chartered planes, new CBA, new max contracts. With all due respect, if Caitlin disappeared from the WNBA, she wouldn’t be missed.”

That statement quickly became one of the biggest reasons for the fierce reaction Acho received online.

Many fans viewed that opinion as completely missing the bigger picture. To them, dismissing the player who helped bring unprecedented attention to the league felt both unfair and disconnected from reality.

Clark’s arrival in 2024 reshaped the WNBA in several measurable ways. Attendance climbed to new highs, while television audiences reached record levels. Merchandise sales also surged as interest continued to grow.

The league also secured a media-rights deal worth more than $3 billion. That financial growth created enough revenue to introduce player revenue sharing, and permanent charter flights soon followed.

As a result, the new collective bargaining agreement delivered major financial gains across the league. Average player salaries increased by nearly 400%, while the biggest stars now earn up to $1.4 million annually.

Those numbers make Acho’s argument difficult to support. Still, disagreement should never lead to racist abuse, and the backlash crossed a line regardless of anyone’s opinion.
