Oilers News and Rumors: Edmonton Reignites Interest in Boston Bruins’ 25-Year-Old D-Man

The Edmonton Oilers rarely stay quiet when a chance to improve their roster appears, even if it starts as a rumor instead of a negotiation. This time around, one intriguing name has resurfaced behind the scenes, giving fans another reason to watch the trade market. The speculation has drawn attention because it could solve more than one problem at the same time.

With momentum building around the idea, the focus is on a young blueliner who may be exactly what Edmonton needs.

Oilers Reignite Interest in Bruins Defenseman Mason Lohrei

The defenseman linked to Edmonton is Mason Lohrei, and the interest appears to stretch back much further than the current trade cycle.

NHL insider Jimmy Murphy reported on X, “Further on the Bruins’ interest: I’ve heard, dating back to January, that the Oilers like Bruins defenseman Mason Lohrei a lot.”

This report suggests the Oilers have viewed Lohrei as a potential fit for months rather than identifying him as a recent target for a potential trade.

The discussion intensified after Sportsnet’s Ryan Dixon proposed a one-for-one swap involving Darnell Nurse and Lohrei.

While the idea remains hypothetical, it addresses needs on both sides. Edmonton is evaluating options after Nurse requested a trade, while Boston has reportedly explored moving Lohrei for immediate NHL help.

Nurse carries a $9.25 million cap hit through the 2029-30 season, whereas Lohrei enters the final year of a contract worth $3.2 million before becoming a restricted free agent.

This difference would free more than $6 million in cap space, giving general manager Stan Bowman greater flexibility to strengthen other parts of the roster, including the goaltending position. However, reports have indicated that interested teams would want the Oilers to retain some part of Nurse’s AAV.

Meanwhile, Lohrei offers an attractive hockey fit.

The 25-year-old left-shot defenseman recorded a career-high 33 points in the 2024-25 season and had 26 points last season. His skating, puck movement, and offensive instincts align well with Edmonton’s transition game, while his 6-foot-5 frame provides the size that could appeal to head coach Mike Babcock.

Boston’s willingness to consider moving him has only added to the speculation. In his latest report for The Athletic, Bruins insider Fluto Shinzawa wrote, “Mason Lohrei, No. 27 on the trade board, could have more offensive value elsewhere.”

Shinzawa also noted that Lohrei was a healthy scratch for Boston’s final three playoff games and cited an anonymous assistant GM who estimated his trade value at a third-round pick. He added that dealing with Lohrei would mainly clear cap space while creating an opportunity for prospect Frederic Brunet.

The Oilers recently watched a goaltending target slip away during the draft, making internal flexibility even more valuable. If Edmonton chooses to reshape its blueline through a player-for-player deal instead of spending additional draft assets, Lohrei remains one of the more logical names to watch.

No trade is close, and Boston has not committed to moving the young defenseman. Still, Murphy’s report confirms Edmonton’s interest did not appear overnight, making Lohrei one of the more compelling names connected to the Oilers as the market continues to evolve.
