‘I Am Not Done Yet’ — Canadiens Veteran Brendan Gallagher Sets Record Straight on Canucks Trade Speculation

The Montreal Canadiens are preparing for a transformative offseason following an emotional announcement from one of their longest-serving leadership figures.

Veteran winger Brendan Gallagher recently confirmed that he is moving on from the only NHL franchise he has ever known, sparking trade speculation across the league.

As general manager Kent Hughes navigates the final year of Gallagher’s contract, the hometown Vancouver Canucks have emerged as a primary suitor. The rumor mill has intensified further with reports linking a potential deal to a larger swap involving Canucks forward Jake DeBrusk heading back to Montreal.

The 34-year-old forward addressed his evolving roster status during a recent appearance on the Donnie & Dhali show, providing a candid outlook on his career trajectory and personal life.

Gallagher concluded a challenging 2025-26 regular season with seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points in 77 games, while managing a diminished role under head coach Martin St. Louis.

Despite the drop in ice time, the gritty winger was recently honored as an honorary citizen of Montreal on June 25, 2026, celebrating a historic 14-season tenure that yielded 246 goals and 241 assists for 487 points in 911 regular-season games.

Now that a departure from Montreal is guaranteed, a return to British Columbia stands out as a highly logical next step. Gallagher grew up in Tsawwassen and starred for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, making the Pacific Northwest a highly desirable landing spot for his growing family.

“There’s so much stuff that goes into that that would be good for me and my family,” Gallagher said on the Donnie and Dhali show. “Obviously, my wife is pregnant right now. By the time next season starts, we’re going to have two little ones under two, so having family around is something that I have to think about when making this decision.”

A move to Vancouver would allow the veteran to contribute his renowned locker-room leadership to an organization that is resetting its competitive culture. Having witnessed the market at its peak during his youth, Gallagher remains deeply aware of the hockey passion ingrained in the city.

“I grew up in Vancouver, I know what that city is like when the team is winning and doing well,” Gallagher said. “It’s such a special place, and for the majority of the last couple decades that team has been a very good team. I know how special a city it is.

“I’m confident as ever. I am not done yet,” Gallagher added.

The logistics of a trade remain fluid as Kent Hughes explores various salary cap solutions for Gallagher’s $6.5 million cap hit. The Canadiens reportedly have concurrent interest in Canucks winger Jake DeBrusk, who carries a $5.5 million annual cap hit through 2031.

Balancing these salaries could facilitate a smooth transition for both franchises, but Gallagher understands that a formal agreement requires mutual organizational motivation.

“There’s so much that goes into it. You can be interested, but you need someone to be interested back. For me, it’s just waiting to see where the next opportunity is and where that may land.”

With free agency opening on July 1 and quickly approaching, Gallagher remains patient as management groups finalize their trade boards.
