The Winnipeg Jets are confronting fresh uncertainty after a disappointing campaign altered expectations around the franchise. The team was once focused on chasing another deep playoff run, but recent developments have turned the focus toward the future of the roster itself.
As rival executives evaluate potential opportunities in Winnipeg ahead of the NHL Draft, one of the organization’s cornerstone players has become a frequent topic of conversation.
Connor Hellebuyck Trade Speculation Intensifies
Connor Hellebuyck remains one of the NHL’s premier goaltenders, yet his name continues to surface in trade discussions as uncertainty surrounds Winnipeg’s direction.
In a recent ESPN Insider notebook, Emily Kaplan, Kristen Shilton, and Greg Wyshynski reported that the situation has advanced beyond ordinary rumor mill chatter.
“The Connor Hellebuyck smoke is real,” the ESPN insiders wrote. “The star goalie for Team USA at the Olympics has made it clear that he’s not happy with the status quo in Winnipeg, leading the Jets to take calls.”
This report helps explain why teams around the league have started checking in with Winnipeg. While Hellebuyck has not formally requested a trade, his frustration following the Jets’ disappointing season has fueled speculation that a change could eventually become a possibility.
The timing is significant.
Hellebuyck is coming off a season in which Winnipeg failed to reach the playoffs after finishing at the top of the NHL standings the year before. For a player whose primary goal is winning a Stanley Cup, the organization’s sudden regression has naturally raised questions about whether the current roster can contend in the near future.
Still, moving Hellebuyck would be far from simple.
The 33-year-old netminder remains under contract through the 2030-31 season on a seven-year, $59.5 million deal carrying an $8.5 million annual cap hit. He possesses a full no-movement clause through the upcoming season, giving him complete control over where he could potentially go.
This combination significantly limits Winnipeg’s options. Even if general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is listening to offers, any deal would require both a substantial return and Hellebuyck’s approval.

The ESPN report also shed light on several teams monitoring the situation. According to Kaplan, Shilton, and Wyshynski, “The Panthers were exploring the possibility,” although Florida’s flexibility has been hamstrung by acquiring Brady Tkachuk.
The insiders noted that Florida has remained reluctant to move Anton Lundell, though players such as Eetu Luostarinen and Evan Rodrigues could enter discussions if talks progress.
Meanwhile, the report urged readers to “keep an eye on Vegas and Carolina as stealthy players for any big names,” identifying both teams as potential dark-horse candidates.
The New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres have also been linked to Hellebuyck as teams seeking a game-changing presence in net.
Recent social media discussion also highlighted just how expensive a potential Buffalo pursuit could become. After the Sabres acquired the No. 4 overall pick, ESPN’s John Buccigross posted on X, “Buffalo loading up for Connor Hellebuyck play.”
NHL insider Frank Seravalli then floated a hypothetical framework involving the No. 4 pick and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in exchange for Hellebuyck, asking, “Who says no?”

For now, there is no indication that a blockbuster is imminent. However, when a franchise goaltender’s frustrations become public and league insiders confirm teams are making calls, the conversation shifts from whether interest exists to how far it could eventually go.
