Mo Salah had a script in hand for Egypt, and he wasn’t about to let New Zealand rain down on their parade. After his team conceded a goal as early as the 15th minute, the former Liverpool superstar took it upon himself to drag Egypt back into the contest, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 67th minute to breathe life into Egypt’s charge.
Two goals in nine minutes caught New Zealand unawares, before Trezeguet scored Egypt’s third for their first win at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Neither Egypt nor New Zealand had ever won a game at the World Cup before, but over the years, Salah has made it a habit to make history at opportune moments.
The celebrations that followed this one took social media by storm, as Salah and his Egyptian teammates took to the streets of Vancouver in the aftermath of that all-important win.

It didn’t take too long for those moments to spread on social media, as fans deservedly applauded the team after a historic win.
“Boss this,” wrote Liverpool fan Abigail Rudkin.
“THE PEOPLE’S CHAMP. Bring him to Barça idc. Work out the tactics later,” added podcaster Muhammad.
“How can you not love Mo Salah? This is the first time I think I’ve ever seen him dancing,” John O Sullivan added.

“Never quite imagined Mo Salah would be on someone’s shoulders dancing after scoring a goal and an assist in a historic World Cup performance. At Burrard Skytrain Station,” journalist Ben Steiner wrote on X.
With that 3-1 win, Salah’s Egypt have all but confirmed their spot in the knockout stages. Having already faced Belgium, Egypt will now take on Iran in their final group stage game this weekend. With a healthy goal difference of +2 and four points in the bag, the odds of topping Group G are heavily in their favor.
The more interesting wrinkle is who they could face in the Round of 32. A win or a draw in the final game against Iran will seal the deal. Should they top the group, they will take on a third-placed team from Groups A, E, H, I or J. That Round of 32 game will be played in Seattle on July 1.
Win that game, and there’s a chance they could go up against Mauricio Pochettino’s United States, in what should serve as a box-office encounter.
