Why Is Marshon Lattimore Still a Free Agent? Why the 4-Time Pro Bowler Remains Unsigned Late in NFL Offseason

Let's examine the true reason cornerback Marshon Lattimore remains a free agent, and where the four-time Pro Bowler could land entering 2026.

Marshon Lattimore has been one of the NFL’s most productive and talented cornerbacks over the past decade. However, he remains unsigned several months into the NFL offseason. Here’s a closer look at why the four-time Pro Bowler is still without a team and where he could potentially land in the coming weeks.

Why Marshon Lattimore Is Still a Free Agent As NFL Training Camps Approach

In the late 2010s and early 2020s, Lattimore built himself a reputation as a bonafide lockdown cornerback. Battling the likes of division rival WRs Julio Jones, Calvin Ridley, D.J. Moore, and most notably, Mike Evans, Lattimore always seemed to hold his own against the league’s best.

His resume reflects a similar sentiment. In seven seasons with the New Orleans Saints, spanning from 2017 to the halfway point of 2024, Lattimore appeared in 97 games and recorded 15 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles, and 5 fumble recoveries to go along with his four Pro Bowl selections and Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2017.

After being traded to the Washington Commanders at the 2024 NFL trade deadline, though, Lattimore struggled to return to his previous level of play. He appeared in just two of a possible eight regular-season games while dealing with a lingering hamstring injury.

Although he suited up for all three of Washington’s playoff games, his impact was limited, and Evans noticeably got the better of him in the Wild Card round.

Unfortunately, 2025 was an even bigger step back. Lattimore suffered a season-ending ACL tear after appearing in the Commanders’ first nine games of the season. Just a few months later, the team officially announced they were moving on from the former star, bringing the experiment to an end.

Now, with offseason workouts underway and training camp approaching, Lattimore is eyeing another opportunity. The question is, who is willing to take the chance on a 30-year-old cornerback coming off a major injury?

Potential Landing Spots for the 30-Year-Old Cornerback

This week, PFSN’s Alex Kennedy published an article outlining potential landing spots for the top remaining free agents. Lattimore came in at No. 2 on the list, and Kennedy made the following case.

PREDICT THE NFL SEASON: PFN’s FREE NFL Playoff Predictor

“Injuries have been a recurring theme in Marshon Lattimore’s NFL career, which played a big role in why the Washington Commanders released him prior to the start of free agency. Over his last four seasons, he’s missed a combined 33 games.”

“That said, when Lattimore has been healthy, he has played at a very high level. Before 2025, he was a top-20 cornerback in the NFL in PFN’s CB Impact Score in each of the previous four seasons. Even this past year, he finished as an average starter, ranking No. 36.”

Kennedy listed the Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Houston Texans as the best fits for the veteran cornerback. The situation will be worth monitoring as teams decide whether to take a chance on Lattimore entering the 2026 season.
