ESPN Analyst Floats 3-Time Pro Bowler As Solution For Packers Amid Micah Parsons’ Injury Rehab

The Green Bay Packers made arguably the most aggressive move of the 2025 offseason when they traded two first-round picks and defensive lineman Kenny Clark to Dallas for Micah Parsons in late August. Parsons immediately validated the investment, as he recorded 12.5 sacks and 27 quarterback hits across 14 games after signing a four-year, $188 million extension.

Unfortunately, Parsons tore his ACL in Week 15 against the Denver Broncos, and the Packers lost their final five games, including a collapse in the Wild Card round against Chicago, where Green Bay blew a 21-3 halftime lead and fell 31-27. With Parsons expected to miss the start of the season, ESPN analyst Aaron Schatz identified free agent Jadeveon Clowney as a potentially valuable addition for the Packers.

How Jadeveon Clowney Will Fill the Gap of Micah Parsons on the Packers’ Defense

The Packers’ new defensive coordinator, Jonathan Gannon, faces a tough task replacing Jeff Hafley and will be without Parsons to start the season. As a result, Schatz believes adding a three-time Pro Bowler in Clowney will be the right move for Green Bay.

“The Packers are counting on Lukas Van Ness to finally live up to his potential as the starting edge across from Micah Parsons. But because Parsons (ACL) isn’t expected to come back until at least mid-October, which pass rusher are they going to play? Brenton Cox Jr.? Barryn Sorrell?” Schatz wrote. “The Packers need another veteran who can help fill in for Parsons and then provide depth once he returns.”

“Clowney’s 22.4% pass rush win rate last season would have been near the top of the league if he had enough pass-rush snaps to qualify for ESPN’s rankings,” Schatz added. “He had 8.5 sacks for Dallas, and the Packers could also use his ability to set the edge against the run.”

Clowney’s 2025 numbers were even more impressive considering the context. The former No. 1 overall pick didn’t sign with Dallas until mid-September and didn’t debut until Week 4, yet he led the Cowboys in sacks by recording 8.5 in just 13 games.

According to PFSN’s EDGE Impact Metric, he posted an impact score of 81.8, which ranked 27th in the league. It was a good return on investment for Dallas, which signed him on a one-year, $3.45 million contract.

Over the past three seasons, Clowney has tallied 130 total tackles, 30 tackles for loss, 23.5 sacks, and 40 QB hits in 44 games across three teams.

Parsons told reporters in early June that he’s adhering to a strict nine-month recovery timeline, putting his realistic return around Week 3 or Week 4 of the 2026 season. Multiple reports suggest he could start the year on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, which means he will miss at least the first four games of the season.

Clowney would provide immediate relief for Gannon’s defense and take pressure off Jordan Love and the offense to carry every game. Once Parsons returns, Clowney would shift into a complementary role, where he would benefit massively from all the attention Parsons would get from opposing offensive lines.
