Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton appear to have made a habit of facing each other this season. Their rivalry has intensified of late, with two of their three meetings in 2026 coming on grass over the past five days.
The first two encounters of 2026 went Shelton’s way, but Fritz exacted revenge in Halle on Friday, June 19.
Taylor Fritz Overcomes Ben Shelton to Reach Halle Semifinal
Fritz and Shelton began their respective grass-court campaigns at the ATP 250 in Stuttgart, where the former was the defending champion. Both players advanced to the final, and Shelton dethroned his compatriot with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 score to clinch his maiden grass title. This marked their second final against each other. At the 2026 Dallas Open, Shelton stole the trophy with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 score after saving three championship points.
When Fritz finally came out on top on Friday, he said during his on-court interview, “It’s just relief, honestly, after that last one (in Stuttgart).”
The all-American quarterfinal clash in Halle featured three tiebreaks. Shelton won the first and had a match point in the second, but Fritz turned the tables just in time to edge out his compatriot 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 7-6(3).
“Once I got into position in the 6-3 spot (in the final set tiebreak), I was just like, ‘I don’t know if I can take losing another one of those to Ben,’” he said, laughing.
“When I say that, I mean just doing everything but winning the match,” Taylor Fritz explained.
What bothered the 28-year-old most about their previous two meetings was that he had opportunities to win both matches but ultimately came up short. He believed the opposite was true this time around.
“The funny thing about this one is he had the chances. He had the better chances, and I think in the other two ones that he won, I probably had the better chances throughout the match,” he said. “So, he was kind of just in my head with capitalizing on the big chances. I’m happy to get through that.”

With his win against Shelton, Fritz has secured a place in the semifinals of the ATP 500 event, where he awaits either Alexander Zverev or Raphael Collignon. The American is chasing his sixth grass-court title, having won five of the six finals he’s contested on the surface.
