Mike Babcock’s name remains a topic of debate across the hockey world, but the conversation has taken on new life as Edmonton weighs its next move behind the bench. While fans and analysts remain divided over his potential return, voices close to the team’s circle are beginning to share where they stand.
The latest take came this week when the representative of two Oilers prospects was asked a direct question about Babcock’s fit with the organization. His answer left little room for interpretation and offered a different perspective on one of hockey’s most polarizing figures.
Agent’s Strong Endorsement Adds New Perspective to Oilers’ Mike Babcock Debate
As speculation mounts around Edmonton’s coaching search, Babcock received a notable vote of confidence from one of the NHL’s player agents.
During an appearance on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer, Gerry Johansson was asked whether he would have concerns about two of his clients, Oilers prospects Matt Savoie and Colton Dach, playing for Babcock if he became Edmonton’s next head coach. Johansson’s response was immediate and unequivocal.
“I have zero hesitation,” Johansson said. “I think Mike’s a really smart guy. I’m sure he’s learned some things over the last few years, like we all have.”
The comments stand out because the question centered on young players, an area where much of the criticism surrounding Babcock has originated. Several former players have publicly criticized his coaching methods over the years, including stories involving younger athletes early in their careers.
Yet Johansson made it clear he does not believe those concerns should prevent a team from considering Babcock.
“I think we all make mistakes. I don’t know anyone in this business who doesn’t make mistakes,” Johansson added. “I know he communicates. I know he’s smart. I know he’s intense. I think any team that hires him would be getting a very good coach.”
These remarks carry weight given Johansson’s connection with active NHL players. As president of The Sports Corporation, he represents numerous NHL players and oversees contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Beyond Savoie and Dach, his client list includes established NHL names such as Seth Jarvis, Adin Hill, and Brayden Point.
The endorsement aligns with the veteran coach’s achievements, as he owns one of the most accomplished résumés in hockey history. It includes a Stanley Cup championship, 2 Olympic gold medals, a World Championship title, and 700 NHL wins. His success behind the bench has never been questioned.
What has remained under scrutiny, however, are the controversies that followed him during and after his coaching stops in Detroit, Toronto, and Columbus. Allegations involving player treatment, locker-room tactics, and the 2023 phone-checking incident with the Blue Jackets contributed to his departure from the NHL.
This week, however, the league completed its review of Babcock’s past conduct and cleared him to return to coaching. This development has given the Oilers the green light to hire the coach. Paperwork is now expected to be drawn up, and we could see Babcock unveiled as early as next week.
