‘Lot Going On in Winnipeg’ — Insider Touches Base on Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors With 3 Teams Already Lining Up

Insider addresses Connor Hellebuyck trade rumors as multiple teams monitor the Winnipeg Jets star's future.

The Winnipeg Jets entered last season expecting to build on their recent success, but the year ended with frustration, tough questions, and uncertainty about the road ahead. Connor Hellebuyck did little to hide his disappointment when speaking after the season, fueling speculation about whether he still believes Winnipeg can contend for a Stanley Cup.

As the organization works to address several roster concerns, rival teams have been paying close attention to every development. This growing interest has become a talking point, especially with one NHL insider weighing in on the rumors, and teams already being linked to the star goaltender.

Darren Dreger Addresses Connor Hellebuyck Trade Rumors and League-Wide Interest

Speaking on Habs on TSN 690, NHL insider Darren Dreger acknowledged the growing noise surrounding Hellebuyck while also urging caution regarding reports of a formal trade request.

“Well, I mean, it’s noise for sure,” Dreger said. He pointed to the emotions surrounding Winnipeg’s difficult season and Hellebuyck’s public frustration after the year ended.

“To my knowledge, he hasn’t officially asked for a trade,” Dreger reported. However, he added that the veteran goaltender “sure indicated” during his exit interview that he wanted to see improvements to the roster.

Dreger noted that Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has a significant to-do list, including filling multiple lineup needs. He also stressed that moving Hellebuyck would only create another major problem.

“If Connor Hellebuyck literally puts more pressure on Winnipeg and says, ‘Okay, let’s just cut bait here,’ now all of a sudden, you need two goalies,” Dreger said.

Even without confirmation of a trade request, the insider acknowledged that teams around the league are discussing Hellebuyck and monitoring developments closely.

“Teams around the NHL are talking about Connor Hellebuyck. But I think that has more to do with media speculation. There’s a lot going on in Winnipeg, and Winnipeg is going to be one of the teams that I focus heavily on in the next couple of weeks, for sure,” Dreger added.

Detroit Red Wings Viewed as a Natural Fit For Hellebuyck

According to reports from around the league, Detroit remains one of the most intriguing possibilities if Hellebuyck ever becomes available.

The connection starts with geography. Hellebuyck grew up in Michigan and was a Red Wings fan as a kid. Detroit also has the cap flexibility and young talent needed to make a serious offer.

Nick Kypreos recently listed Detroit among the teams expected to enter the conversation should Winnipeg explore trade options. A package could potentially include one of Detroit’s top goaltending prospects along with premium draft capital and roster assets.

Buffalo Sabres Continue to Surface in Trade Discussions

Buffalo has frequently been linked to Hellebuyck because of its desire to stabilize the position long-term.

The Sabres possess one of the league’s deeper prospect pools and have the resources to pursue a blockbuster acquisition. Kypreos specifically identified Buffalo as a team that would likely wish to be involved if Hellebuyck becomes available.

Speculation around potential returns has included significant assets, with Winnipeg expected to seek a package capable of helping both now and in the future.

Florida Panthers Offer an Immediate Championship Opportunity

Florida may present the strongest hockey argument among all rumored destinations.

Pierre LeBrun recently suggested the Panthers could enter the mix if uncertainty remains around Sergei Bobrovsky’s future. A move to Florida would reunite Hellebuyck with former Jets coach Paul Maurice while placing him on a perennial Stanley Cup contender.

LeBrun noted that if Winnipeg becomes willing to move its star netminder, Florida would likely try to “get into that conversation,” though he acknowledged the asking price could be substantial.

For now, Winnipeg continues working to improve its roster and convince Hellebuyck that the organization can contend. But as Dreger acknowledged, the speculation is real, the interest is growing, and several teams are paying close attention to one of hockey’s biggest unresolved situations.
