San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama will not turn 23 until next January. He is a two-time All-Star, an All-NBA selection while leading the league in blocks for three consecutive years.
The Spurs advanced to the NBA Finals before losing to the New York Knicks in five games. Wembanyama is a matchup nightmare, combining height, foot speed, and serious athletic ability. Yet, the Finals revealed flaws in his game. An ESPN analyst believes that one thing could improve Wembanyama’s game.
ESPN Analyst Believes That Adding Post Moves Will Help Victor Wembanyama
On the heels of averaging 23.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks in the postseason, many believe that Wembanyama hasn’t reached anywhere near his prime. Jay Williams, former NBA player and current ESPN analyst, believes that Wembanyama’s unlocking post moves would completely boost his game.
“He’s one of the most talented players the game of basketball has ever seen. … Having a back to the basket move will be imperative for his development.”

“A signature move, on the post. Look, he’s one of the most talented players the game of basketball has ever seen. 7’4″, can move on the perimeter like Kevin Durant at times. Not the same handle as Kevin Durant, but you get what I’m saying. But having a back-to-the-basket move will be imperative for his development. By the way, Tim Duncan’s in your backyard. Go get that job done this offseason.”
Williams’ quote contains a mix of parallels and facts tinged with opinion. For his size, Wembanyama could eventually be a generational player. However, Durant, as a swing man, isn’t an accurate comparison.
However, Tim Duncan’s presence could definitely help. Duncan was never the athlete Wembanyama is. Leaning on Duncan’s expertise and mentorship could change the trajectory of Wembanyama’s career.
Yet, Duncan excelled with an array of post moves, from jump hooks to sweeping layups to up-and-under moves. Nicknamed ” The Big Fundamental”, Duncan’s post-game helped him enjoy a long career, five NBA titles, and a Hall of Fame induction.
Wembanyama is five inches taller with the build of a small forward. Still, the same length that helps him cover ground defensively would help him in the paint.
With a back-to-the-basket repertoire and lateral mobility, the Spurs center can use the height to sweep into either the lane or spin towards the baseline. Granted, listed at 235 pounds, Wembanyama cannot truly evolve into a player who relies on brute force.

His game will probably not morph into that of a banger. At the same time, post moves can draw attention to the paint. From there, Wembanyama can easily spot the open teammate on the perimeter for an open shot. In a way, post moves could not only bolster Wembanyama’s game but possibly provide the team with enhanced scoring opportunities.
