Alexander Zverev has found himself at the center of a growing controversy after recent remarks about his off-court life were interpreted as a jab at Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Describing himself as a “laid-back guy” unconcerned with material luxuries, the German sparked intense speculation, with fans dissecting whether his comments were directed at his rivals.
Why Alexander Zverev’s Comments Have Sparked Controversy
Zverev recently clinched his maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open, triumphing over Flavio Cobolli in the final. Speaking to Esquire Germany a few days after his victory, the 29-year-old opened up about his “uncomplicated” lifestyle away from the court, explaining that it revolves around his daughter Mayla, his girlfriend Sophia Thomalla, and their pet dog.
“Off the pitch, I’m an extremely laid-back guy. I want my life to be as uncomplicated as possible. All that matters to me is the well-being of the people closest to me – my family, my daughter, Sophia, my dogs. We simply want to spend quality, carefree time together. That’s my foundation,” Zverev said.
The world No. 3 also emphasized that he has no interest in status symbols like yachts and luxury cars, saying his happiness did not depend on such extravagances.
“I don’t need perfection in my daily life, and I don’t define myself by status symbols. No superyachts, no twenty Ferraris. True happiness for me is much simpler: playing a round of golf in the afternoon and then coming home to my dogs. That gives me far more than any material luxury,” he added.
Given that Carlos Alcaraz made headlines earlier this year for ordering a customized luxury Sunreef ULTIMA 88 yacht and Jannik Sinner owns a collection of luxury cars that includes a Ferrari 812 Competizione, many interpreted Zverev’s comments as a veiled dig at the two stars.
Fans called out the German, accusing him of taking an “uncalled for” jab at Alcaraz and Sinner.
“Zverev: “I don’t define myself by status symbols. No superyachts, no twenty Ferraris.” That’s clearly a jab at Alcaraz and Sinner. Uncalled for,” one fan posted.
“he’s exactly that type of person who needs to shade others because he can’t handle the fact that they’re so much better than him,” another fan said.
One fan even sarcastically mocked Zverev for defining golf, which is widely considered a luxury sport, as a simple pleasure.
“« I play golf » Yeah that sport for humble and poor people… 😂,” the fan wrote.
Meanwhile, others questioned why Alcaraz and Sinner maintained a cordial relationship with the world No. 3.
“really wish carlos and jannik would stop giving this guy the time of day,” a fan commented.
“wow…. instead of enjoying his title he is shading jannik and carlos. please tell me why they like him so much🤡,” another fan wrote.
Adding another layer to the debate, tennis journalist José Morón noted that Zverev himself owns a Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut hypercar, which is valued at €4 million ($4.6 million).

While Carlos Alcaraz remains sidelined for the grass-court season due to his wrist injury and Jannik Sinner has opted to skip all tour-level events before Wimbledon, Alexander Zverev is set to commence his grass swing at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle. The top seed will lock horns with VÃt KopÅ™iva in the first round of the ATP 500 event.
