The Indiana Fever continue to navigate their season under some heavy media spotlight. Head coach Stephanie White has the team sitting at 7-5 after a chaotic stretch that thoroughly tested the locker room.
The Fever most recently defeated the Chicago Sky 114-106 in overtime on Thursday. While the product is improving, the narratives and rumors around the franchise and its stars rarely stop.
Sophie Cunningham Discusses Playing for the Closely Scrutinized Indiana Fever
Before the gritty victory over Chicago, Indiana edged out the Washington Mystics 78-76 on Monday night, with Caitlin Clark hitting a game-winning 3-pointer from 31 feet out with under 2 seconds remaining.
More than celebration, the focus shifted to rumors of players ignoring White’s instructions after Cunningham shared a postgame Instagram carousel.
While Cunningham later clarified the situation, controversies and rumors have plagued Indiana all season long.
An exchange between Clark and White during a brutal 100-84 loss to the Portland Fire on May 30 dominated sports media for days, with fans and pundits claiming a locker room mutiny and fallout between the franchise and the Fever star.
Cunningham addressed this toxic media environment directly on her “Show Me Something” podcast with West Wilson.
She highlighted the extreme pressure placed on younger players as they try to find their footing in the league under the Fever franchise.
“All of our new rookies, they’re seeing that every little thing that they like, every little thing that they post, even like the inside jokes or like what we call each other, everyone just blows it out of proportion,” Cunningham said.
“It drove a couple of them kind of crazy like last week. They’re like, ‘How do you guys do this?'”
“And I’m like, ‘You just can’t think about it,'” Cunningham continued. “You got to keep doing you. Don’t let it bother you. But being in Indiana, everything is on full microscope times a million. And you have to have thick skin to play here cuz they eat everything up.”
The Fever successfully blocked out the noise against Chicago on Thursday night as Clark (32 points) and Aliyah Boston (34 points, 12 rebounds) stepped up to carry the offense through a grueling overtime period.
Clark went a flawless 15-for-15 from the free-throw line in the overtime win, with Kelsey Mitchell contributing 19 points.
Indiana returns to the court Saturday night against the Connecticut Sun, hoping to keep its momentum rolling and clinch a third consecutive win.
