Alexander Zverev is standing on the verge of a golden opportunity as he gears up to face Flavio Cobolli in the French Open final on Sunday. It’s the 29-year-old’s chance to finally win his maiden Grand Slam title that has slipped through his fingers in years past. Meanwhile, a comment he made about the mental state of professional athletes has sparked a debate, with a former WTA pro calling it a “lack of respect.”
Alizé Cornet Destroys Fan Defending Alexander Zverev Over ‘Stupid’ Athletes Remark
After the semifinal win against Jakub Mensik, the German was asked what goes through his mind in the chaotic moments just before stepping out of the tunnel, especially when his name is announced.
Zverev’s response was blunt. “Yeah, pure emptiness. There’s absolutely nothing in my head,” he admitted. “To be honest, though, we’re athletes. Very few of us have anything in our heads anyway. So sometimes, it’s easier to be stupid and not think too much.”
The comments were mixed, with many thinking it was another self-deprecating joke from Zverev and others believing it was Zverev calling out athletes for being empty-headed.
Former French pro Alizé Cornet found the statement quite offensive. Taking to social media, the ex-world No. 1 took a shot at Zverev’s generalization.
“The uselessness of this statement,” Cornet said, “Saying that athletes have nothing in their skulls. Let him speak for himself, but don’t lump us all into the same bag. It’s a huge lack of respect for the players and for the athletes.”
😳 ALIZÉ CORNET DESTROZÓ A ALEXANDER ZVEREV.

Cornet’s defense of athletes’ intelligence quickly sparked an online debate. While some supported her, others felt she had missed the punchline entirely.
One user on X pushed back against the criticism: “Alizé Cornet, have you forgotten the meaning of self-deprecation or what? Zverev just made a joke about a cliché. He’s right, by the way, sometimes it’s good to be ‘silly’ and not overthink things.”
And Cornet fired back with a troll, “Completely forgotten when it comes to Zverev.”

Zverev has been a highly polarizing figure in the tennis world over the last few years, dealing with many publicized controversies off the court. Recently, he faced backlash from fans and pundits for putting himself in the same tier as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz while heaping praise on Jannik Sinner. He had to clarify that he meant that only considering that Alcaraz is injured and Djokovic is at the dusk of his career.
In today’s final, Zverev is set to face Cobolli not before 3:00 p.m. local time (CEST), and 9 a.m. ET.
