The Toronto Maple Leafs endured a disastrous season, missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years. The disappointing campaign led to major changes, with both general manager Brad Treliving and head coach Craig Berube losing their jobs as the organization looked to reset its direction.
Now, thanks to an unexpected stroke of lottery luck and the opportunity to draft generational prospect Gavin McKenna, the mood around the franchise has completely changed. As excitement builds ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft, new general manager John Chayka is making it clear that Toronto sees McKenna as much more than just the No. 1 prospect available.
Maple Leafs Boss John Chayka Gives Honest Assessment of McKenna
Speaking at the NHL Scouting Combine in Buffalo, Chayka revealed that the Maple Leafs went far beyond watching game film and reviewing statistics when evaluating McKenna.
In an effort to better understand the person behind the player, members of Toronto’s front office traveled to Whitehorse, Yukon, to spend time with McKenna and his family. McKenna first revealed the visit on the NHL Draft Class podcast before Chayka confirmed it publicly.
The trip left a strong impression on the Leafs GM. Chayka said, “Gavin, really nice young man, really quality family, spent some quality time with them, got to know him. He’s a small-town kid. It’s a remote area of the world, very peaceful, but beautiful. And within that, I think there’s some real resolve around who he is and what his career means to him and his family. And I find it impressive.”
While McKenna’s talent is obvious, Toronto’s interest goes beyond what he can do on the ice. The organization wanted to learn more about his character, personality, and ability to handle the intense spotlight that comes with playing for the Maple Leafs.
Chayka emphasized that point when discussing the evaluation process. “We want to make sure we get the person right first and foremost. And everyone’s seen him play and knows the skill level and the talent. But as we think about a Toronto Maple Leaf and what that means, you know, just really digging into that part,” Chayka added.
McKenna’s production speaks for itself. Whether it was his dominant WHL career or his impressive 51 points in 34 games at Penn State, scouts already know he has elite offensive ability. The Leafs, however, appear equally focused on making sure he has the maturity and mindset to thrive in one of hockey’s most demanding markets.
After Mitch Marner’s departure to Vegas, the Leafs were left with a hole beside Auston Matthews. McKenna could be the perfect long-term fit thanks to his elite playmaking ability.
