The Minnesota Wild enter the offseason with a familiar challenge after another year of searching for a true difference-maker at center. This pursuit may have taken an unexpected turn after Dylan Larkin’s reported trade request created one of the NHL’s biggest offseason storylines.
Several teams are expected to explore the possibility, but Minnesota continues to emerge as a team worth watching closely. As speculation builds across the league, it’s worth exploring the type of package it could take to bring the Red Wings captain to St. Paul.
Proposed Minnesota Wild Package for Dylan Larkin Trade Starts Coming Into Focus
It was Sportsnet Insider Elliotte Friedman who first reported that “according to multiple sources, Larkin recently requested a trade from Detroit.” Since then, insiders have been speculating about potential destinations, and Minnesota has emerged as one of the most likely fits.
Why the Wild would be interested is easy to understand. For years, Minnesota has searched for a true top-line center capable of elevating an already talented forward group. Larkin would instantly address that need while giving the team another proven offensive driver to complement Kirill Kaprizov and the rest of its core.
The bigger question is cost.
Early projections from analysts suggest Detroit would seek a premium return centered around some of Minnesota’s most valuable young assets. Names frequently mentioned include top prospect Danila Yurov, goaltending prospect Jesper Wallstedt, and a future first-round draft pick.
These pieces represent the type of package Detroit could use to accelerate a retool if general manager Steve Yzerman decides to move his captain.

The idea gained additional traction on social media shortly after Friedman’s report surfaced. Former NHL player Erik Johnson reacted on X by writing, “Welcome to the Minnesota Wild, Dylan Larkin.”
ESPN broadcaster John Buccigross took the discussion a step further when he responded with a proposed framework, stating, “For Wallstedt [Jesper], Yurov [Danila], Stramel [Charlie], a 2027 #1, and a 2028 #3, and I’ll listen.” While not presented as an actual negotiation, that nugget of opinion showed the type of significant return many around the league believe Detroit would demand.
Veteran Wild reporter Michael Russo also weighed in after ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reported on Larkin’s trade request. Responding on X, Russo simply wrote that the chances of Minnesota being interested are “a million percent,” reinforcing the belief that the Wild are a logical landing spot.
Several factors continue to strengthen that connection. Larkin has existing relationships with members of Minnesota’s core and recently played for Team USA under Wild general manager Bill Guerin’s leadership. These ties could make Minnesota an appealing destination if Larkin ultimately exercises control through his full no-trade clause.
Financially, the Wild can make the move work, though not without adjustments. Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season. Minnesota currently has enough projected cap space to absorb that contract, but doing so would leave limited flexibility to complete the rest of its roster.
This reality could force the Wild to send salary back to Detroit as part of any agreement.
Competition will also be a factor.
Montreal and San Jose possess attractive assets and greater cap flexibility, giving both teams the ability to challenge Minnesota if trade talks advance.

Still, if Detroit opens serious negotiations, the emerging consensus is that any successful Wild offer will begin with elite prospects, premium draft capital, and a willingness to pay a substantial price for one of the NHL’s most sought-after centers.
