Anna Kalinskaya has found herself embroiled in controversy following her quarterfinal loss at the 2026 French Open. The Russian fell short against qualifier Maja Chwalińska, who is competing in the Roland Garros main draw for the first time in her career. In the wake of her loss, Kalinskaya made comments about Chwalińska’s track record on surfaces other than clay that proved misleading.

As the No. 22 seed, Kalinskaya entered her quarterfinal clash against Chwalińska with the advantage of a higher ranking and more experience. However, the Pole showed no signs of being overwhelmed by the occasion as she rushed to a 5-1 lead in the opening set. Although Kalinskaya fought back to level the scores, Chwalińska emerged victorious in the tiebreak and went on to seal a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory, advancing to her maiden Grand Slam semifinal.
During her post-match press conference, Kalinskaya was asked whether she could see the Pole enjoying similar success on other surfaces. In response, the Russian disclosed that she had reviewed Chwalińska’s statistics before their showdown and was under the impression that she played almost exclusively on clay.
Kalinskaya stated that Chwalińska had played only three hard-court matches and added that she would welcome a rematch on a surface other than clay.
“I checked her statistics before, she only plays on clay. She played maybe three matches on hardcourt. I don’t know. Let’s see how she’s going to, because now she has a better ranking. She has to play different surfaces. I would like to take a rematch on grass or hardcourt,” Kalinskaya said.
While it is true that Chwalińska has featured in only three hard-court matches in the main draws of WTA Tour events this year, that figure does not tell the full story. When her qualifying matches at the ASB Classic, the Australian Open, and the Transylvania Open, as well as her campaign at the WTA 125 Oeiras 1 Jamor Indoor, are also taken into account, the Pole has played 14 hard-court matches in 2026. The Pole has also won two ITF titles on hard courts in previous seasons.
Given the discrepancy between Kalinskaya’s remarks and Chwalińska’s actual track record, the Russian faced criticism from tennis fans for spreading misinformation about her opponent. One fan took issue with her perceived “disrespectful tone,” while others suggested her comments were motivated by frustration over the defeat and deemed her a “sore loser.”
Some also claimed the incident proved Camila Osorio was “right” about her apparent grievances with Kalinskaya, referring to the tension between the two players during their third-round clash at the French Open. The controversy arose after Osorio offered a notably brief and cold handshake to the Russian, who had claimed a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 victory.
The catalyst for Osorio’s frustration was reported to be the medical timeout Kalinskaya took while trailing 0-4, 0-40 in the second set, and the incident also brought renewed attention to their fraught history.
While Anna Kalinskaya will now turn her attention to the upcoming grass-court season, Maja Chwalińska is set to take on No. 25 seed Diana Shnaider in the semifinals of the clay-court Major. Shnaider will be riding the momentum of her 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, making it a tough test for Chwalińska.
The winner between Shnaider and Chwalińska will face either No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva or No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk in the French Open final.
