The conversation surrounding the 2026 Stanley Cup Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes has taken an interesting turn thanks to Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk.
As the two teams prepare to battle for hockey’s biggest prize, Tkachuk, the two-time Stanley Cup champion, believes one factor could give Carolina an edge over Mitch Marner and the Golden Knights before the series even begins.
Matthew Tkachuk Explains Golden Knights’ Challenge
Vegas finished the regular season with a 39-26-17 record and 95 points, good enough to capture the Pacific Division title.
The Golden Knights have been impressive throughout the playoffs, highlighted by a sweep of the top-seeded Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final. However, their road to the Stanley Cup Final hasn’t been easy. Vegas needed six games to eliminate the Utah Mammoth in the opening round and another six games to get past the Anaheim Ducks in Round 2.
By the time they reached the Final, the Golden Knights had already played 16 playoff games.
Carolina’s path has been much smoother. The Hurricanes finished the regular season with a dominant 53-22-7 record and 113 points, winning the Metropolitan Division. They then carried that momentum into the postseason, sweeping the Ottawa Senators in the first round and the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round before eliminating the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the Eastern Conference Final.
As a result, Carolina needed only 13 playoff games to reach the Stanley Cup Final.
Tkachuk believes that difference matters. “Carolina might have a tiny advantage in that because the playoffs are so crazy. They’re way faster than the regular season. We try to explain to the fans how different it is, but you really can’t unless you experience it. But if you’ve only played 13 games and it’s June, you have to have the advantage,” Tkachuk said on the Wingmen podcast.
“I don’t care, maybe Vegas swept too. So you could say they had the advantage. Like, you’ve only played 13 games. You’re not tired. You’re not sore. You’re over-rested right now,” he added.
In Tkachuk’s view, Carolina’s lighter playoff workload has left the Hurricanes fresher and healthier heading into the championship series.
That could be significant against a Vegas team that has battled through three physically demanding rounds.

Marner, meanwhile, has been outstanding this postseason, leading all players with 21 points. But as Tkachuk noted, even that may not be enough against a Hurricanes team entering the Stanley Cup Final with a significant rest advantage.
For Vegas, the challenge isn’t just facing an 113-point powerhouse. It’s facing one that arrives in June with less wear and tear than almost anyone else left standing.
