‘Total Collapse’ — NHL World Dumbstruck as Mitch Marner’s Golden Knights Sweep Colorado Avalanche

The NHL world is still trying to process what just happened. The Colorado Avalanche, fresh off a dominant 121-point Presidents’ Trophy season, were expected to cruise into the Stanley Cup Final. Instead, they were completely dismantled by the Vegas Golden Knights, who pulled off a stunning four-game sweep in the Western Conference Final under head coach John Tortorella.

Vegas sealed the series Tuesday night with a gritty 2-1 victory at T-Mobile Arena, punching its ticket to the 2026 Stanley Cup Final and sending shockwaves across the hockey world.

At the center of the story is Mitch Marner, whose incredible postseason resurgence and NHL-leading playoff scoring totals have left fans in Toronto stunned and the rest of the league scrambling for answers.

NHL Reacts to Mitch Marner and Golden Knights’ Sweep

If Game 3 was all about Vegas’s emotional comeback, Game 4 showcased the Golden Knights’ suffocating defensive structure.

Just 4:42 into the opening period, captain Mark Stone opened the scoring after collecting a high flip pass from Brayden McNabb on a breakaway. After a scoreless second period, Cole Smith extended their lead late in regulation with a deflection goal. Gabriel Landeskog gave Colorado life moments later. But the Golden Knights shut things down the rest of the way to secure the 2-1 victory and complete the shocking sweep.

The result left fans, analysts, and insiders around the league stunned that a Colorado team viewed as the Stanley Cup favorite could be eliminated so decisively.

NHL writer Justin Michael reacted by questioning whether major changes are now inevitable in Mile High City. “I wrote last spring that Jared Bednar is the greatest coach in Avalanche history and I honestly still believe that. But getting swept in this series has to result in a major change. Feels like it has to be the end of the era. Just a total collapse in every sense,” he wrote.

Senior NHL writer Mark Lazerus compared the upset to one of the biggest playoff shocks in recent memory, calling it “the most shocking sweep since Columbus dusted Tampa Bay in 2019.”

The Athletic’s Thomas Drance pointed directly to Vegas’s defensive dominance as the difference. “Vegas’ sweep of Colorado is a shocking result,” Drance posted. “And it’s the result of one of the most complete and suffocating team-level defensive performances of the decade.”

NHL analyst Judd Zulgad shared a similar view, calling the series an “absolute playoff clinic” by the Golden Knights. Oilers insider Bob Stauffer also noted the growing dominance of Pacific Division teams, pointing out that a Pacific club has now reached the Stanley Cup Final in four straight seasons: Vegas in 2023 and 2026, and Edmonton in both 2024 and 2025.

Now, the Golden Knights can rest and prepare for the Stanley Cup Final, where they will face either the Carolina Hurricanes or Montreal Canadiens as they chase another championship.
