‘Embarrassing, Completely Ridiculous’ — Maple Leafs Brass Criticized Over Half-Hearted Auston Matthews Meeting

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have landed the No. 1 overall pick and kicked off a massive organizational reset, but the biggest talking point in hockey right now isn’t Gavin McKenna or the coaching search; it’s a Zoom call.

After reports surfaced that Auston Matthews met virtually with new GM John Chayka and franchise legend Mats Sundin, criticism exploded across the hockey world, with several analysts questioning why the Maple Leafs didn’t meet their captain face-to-face in what should have been an eventful sitdown.

Maple Leafs Slammed Over Auston Matthews Meeting

When Elliotte Friedman revealed on his 32 Thoughts podcast that Auston Matthews recently held a lengthy virtual meeting with Toronto’s new front office, debate quickly erupted, with many analysts arguing that the Maple Leafs should have traveled to Arizona to meet their captain in person.

NHL insider Jim Matheson criticized the situation, saying, “Chayka and Sundin should have been on a plane to have dinner with Matthews. Not a Zoom. He is your captain.”

Former NHL player turned analyst Mike Johnson echoed that sentiment, admitting he would have prioritized an in-person meeting if he were in Chayka’s position. “If I was John Chayka, I would’ve made it a priority to do it face-to-face,” Johnson said.

Jeff O’Neill was even more blunt, calling the virtual meeting “embarrassing” and saying, “A Zoom call is completely ridiculous.”

While the criticism may seem fair, it also doesn’t fully take into account the current situation surrounding both Matthews and the Maple Leafs organization.

The Maple Leafs captain is still recovering from a major knee surgery he underwent in March after the hit from Radko Gudas of the Anaheim Ducks. Matthews has been rehabbing in Arizona and is currently limited physically, making travel difficult during his recovery process.

At the same time, Toronto’s new management group is handling an extremely busy offseason. The organization is currently conducting a head coaching search to replace Craig Berube while also preparing for the 2026 NHL Draft after unexpectedly winning the No. 1 overall pick.

Trying to organize a multi-day trip to Arizona during coaching interviews and pre-draft preparation likely wasn’t realistic for a front office still in the early stages of reshaping the franchise.

Despite the outside criticism, reports suggest the meeting itself was actually very productive.

According to Friedman, the call gave Chayka and Sundin an opportunity to present their long-term vision for the organization, discuss roster plans, and outline the direction they want to take the team moving forward.

More importantly for Toronto fans, all signs reportedly point toward Matthews remaining fully committed to the Maple Leafs. The captain reportedly reiterated his desire to win in Toronto, and there were no concerns raised internally about his future with the organization.

Matthews’ teammate, William Nylander, also posted a YouTube video earlier this week pledging his future to the Leafs as they look to pick up the pieces from a broken season.

While the Zoom meeting created plenty of headlines, it appears the Leafs left the conversation feeling confident about where things stand with their franchise player.
