‘Goes Into the Gutter’ — National Analyst Warns Mike Norvell’s Job Is on the Line in FSU Disaster Scenario

With a brutal pre-Halloween schedule looming, Josh Pate outlines how panic could lead to a mid-season firing for Florida State's Mike Norvell.

Florida State head coach Mike Norvell’s safety net is shrinking rapidly. Coming off an agonizing 5-7 stretch where the program has struggled to maintain its elite footing, the 2026 season presents a terrifying ultimatum.

Josh Pate Outlines Mike Norvell’s Disaster Scenario at Florida State

National college football analyst Josh Pate delivered a sobering reality check for the Seminoles on “Josh Pate’s College Football Show.” Looking at Florida State’s daunting schedule, Pate outlined an absolute disaster scenario where the season completely unravels before the calendar even flips to November, potentially triggering an abrupt coaching change in Tallahassee.

“They don’t get to ease into it. They play SMU and they play at Alabama their first three games,” Pate noted. “Two of their first three games are, well, they’re going to be underdogs, I would say, in two of their first three games. We don’t have the SMU-FSU line yet, right? But SMU is going to be a favorite in Tallahassee, pretty sure. And they’ll certainly be probably a double-digit underdog on the road at Alabama.”

“So my point there is if you think about pre-Halloween, by the time the dust settles, by the time the clock strikes midnight on Halloween, they will have already played SMU, Alabama, Virginia, Louisville, Miami, and Clemson,” Pate warned. “They could lose every one of those games.”

The true danger is the looming institutional panic. In modern college football, athletic directors have thin patience.

James Franklin, Brian Kelly, and Hugh Freeze could attest to it. So, Pate explicitly highlighted that a string of early losses could catalyze a mid-season coaching crisis.

“And if they lose even most of those games, then you could really, really start a downhill slide,” Pate explained. “You could have movement on the coaching front by that point and all it just goes into the gutter if that happens.”

Statistically and strictly looking at raw talent, Florida State possesses a depth chart that should comfortably clear a sub-.500 floor. But football isn’t played on paper, and momentum is a fragile metric.

“I’m trying to balance in my head that I think their talent roster is better than 5-7,” Pate concluded. “But also there’s a disaster scenario here where if they lose a few games early and they make a move, then the season goes off the rails and they’re going to be worse than 5-7.”

This offseason is a total structural reset for Florida State as it ranks near the bottom of the country (No. 98 overall) in returning snap percentages, bringing back just 32% of its production from last year. To combat this lack of continuity, Norvell aggressively utilized the transfer portal and added the likes of former Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels.

Yet, the expectations for 2026 are highly volatile. If Daniels and young weapons like wide receiver Jayvan Boggs hit their stride, Florida State has the raw talent to easily exceed expectations.

However, if the overhauled roster stumbles early, a disaster scenario could quickly unfold in Tallahassee. PFSN’s CFB Playoff Meter only hands Florida State a predicted win total of 5.53.

If Pate’s dark projection comes to fruition, the baseline safety net of a 5-7 or 6-6 rebuilding year disappears. If Norvell cannot secure crucial upset wins early against the likes of SMU or Alabama, the internal pressure in Tallahassee could pull the plug entirely, sending the entire season, and Norvell’s tenure, straight into the darkness.
