NHL Rumors: Boston Bruins Could Battle Maple Leafs For $54,250,000-Valued D-Man

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins had vastly dissimilar fortunes. Though the Bruins made the playoffs, a 4-2 series loss to the Buffalo Sabres means they’ll go back to the drawing board. The Leafs, meanwhile, sang a song of woe, missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

Toronto’s collapse triggered sweeping organizational changes, while Boston’s early postseason exit exposed lingering weaknesses on the blueline behind Charlie McAvoy. As both franchises prepare for aggressive summers, the two teams could battle it out for one of the NHL’s fastest-rising defensemen.

Bruins and Maple Leafs Linked to Breakout Tampa Bay Defenseman

The player drawing league-wide attention is Darren Raddysh, who emerged as one of the NHL’s most productive defensemen during the 2025-26 season while filling a major role for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Injuries across Tampa Bay’s blueline created a larger opportunity for the 30-year-old, and he responded with a breakout campaign that has dramatically increased his market value ahead of 2026 free agency.

Raddysh finished the season with 70 points in 73 games and scored 22 goals after never scoring more than six goals in a single NHL season. This sudden offensive explosion has left front offices debating whether his production reflects a legitimate long-term evolution or a contract-year surge fueled by Tampa Bay’s elite offensive structure.

In a recent column for The Athletic, Bruins insider Fluto Shinzawa made an argument for Boston to pursue the defenseman aggressively if he reaches the open market.

In a best-case scenario for Boston, Shinzawa wrote, “Raddysh signs a seven-year, $54.25 million contract,” while acknowledging the risk attached to committing long-term to a player coming off a single breakout year.

However, he also explained why Boston could find value in Raddysh, noting that the defenseman would address “a significant shortcoming for the Bruins: a right-shot defenseman who can get pucks on net and drive offense from the blueline.”

The Bruins’ interest makes sense considering their current roster structure. Boston already possesses a cornerstone in McAvoy, but lacks another reliable offensive right-shot option deeper in the lineup.

With nearly $16 million in projected cap space, management has the flexibility to pursue a major addition without entering a rebuilding phase.

Toronto’s pursuit appears equally logical, although for different reasons. The Maple Leafs missed the postseason entirely after a disastrous season that ended with major front-office changes and growing pressure to reshape the defense corps.

New leadership under John Chayka is expected to prioritize mobility and puck movement on the blueline, areas where Raddysh immediately fits.

The Toronto native could also appeal to the organization because of his ability to run a power play while handling elevated minutes against strong competition. Internally, the Leafs are searching for a long-term solution capable of stabilizing the top four and helping modernize their transition game after several seasons of inconsistency.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, continues pushing for a contract extension before July 1. General manager Julien BriseBois views Raddysh as too important to lose, especially with the organization’s prospect pipeline thinning out on defense.

The challenge remains financial, as the blueliner is coming off a contract carrying just a $975,000 cap hit and is now projected to command over $7 million annually.

This expected price tag could ultimately turn negotiations into a full-scale bidding war between multiple contenders, with both Toronto and Boston positioned near the center of it all.
