‘Crazy Revisionist History’ — Former Leafs Enforcer Slammed For Dissing Canucks Star Elias Pettersson

The Vancouver Canucks entered the 2026 offseason carrying the weight of one of the darkest seasons in franchise history after finishing dead last in the NHL standings. A disastrous defensive structure, the midseason departure of captain Quinn Hughes, and continued inconsistency from the team’s top players pushed the organization toward a complete front-office reset.

Amid the fallout, scrutiny surrounding Elias Pettersson has only intensified as questions continue to grow about his long-term future in Vancouver. His declining production and massive contract have already made him one of the league’s most debated players over the last two years.

This conversation escalated again after a former Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer took a public shot at the Canucks star, triggering immediate backlash from analysts and fans across social media.

Vancouver’s Collapse Fuels Harsher Spotlight on Elias Pettersson

Former Maple Leafs forward Jay Rosehill reignited the debate surrounding Pettersson after posting on X, “I remember another player being highly touted coming out of the Swedish league. Elias something or other?” The tweet was in response to social media hype around 2026 NHL Draft prospect Ivar Stenberg.

The comment drew immediate attention because Pettersson was once viewed as one of Sweden’s top modern forwards before his recent struggles in Vancouver.

Pettersson’s difficult 2025-26 campaign added more pressure to an already tense situation. The 27-year-old center finished the season with 15 goals and 51 points in 74 games while carrying an $11.6 million cap hit.

Vancouver also endured major internal instability during the year, including a coaching disconnect, repeated benching controversies, and trade speculation tied to Pettersson’s long-term fit with the organization.

Analysts and Fans Push Back Against Criticism of Canucks Center

While frustration around Pettersson’s regression remains understandable, many analysts argued Rosehill’s post ignored how dominant the Canucks forward once was during his peak years.

NYR Louie responded on X, defending Pettersson’s overall career body of work, writing, “If Elias Pettersson is the floor for all Swedish prospects, I’d take a Swede every pick. This is crazy revisionist history, trading EP40 like he’s Nail Yakupov.”

Others pointed toward Pettersson’s earlier NHL success and elite reputation before injuries and confidence issues began affecting his game. NHL analyst Nathan Murdock wrote, “Elias Pettersson was a Top 10 center in his prime. Revisionist history.” Murdock also referenced Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson while arguing that every development league produces both stars and disappointments.

The criticism surrounding Rosehill’s remarks continued to grow as more media voices joined the discussion. NHL reporter Chris Meaney summed up the situation briefly on X by writing, “Recency bias to a tee.”

Another strong reaction came from hockey analytics expert JFresh, who pushed back against the growing narrative surrounding Pettersson’s decline. JFresh shared the post on X and wrote, ‘It’s cool that Pettersson scored at a 34-goal, 83-point pace over his first six seasons, including a 100-point season, and we’ve retconned him into having been a bust the whole time.”

Despite his recent struggles, Pettersson still ranks 13th all-time in regular-season scoring among players selected fifth overall in NHL history, recording 508 points in 545 games. Those totals came even after two disappointing seasons in Vancouver.

The comparison becomes even more notable considering Jaromir Jagr remains the only fifth-overall pick to surpass 1,000 career points, finishing with 1,921.

Before the recent slump, Pettersson built his reputation as one of Sweden’s most celebrated young stars. After being drafted fifth overall in 2017, he dominated the Swedish Hockey League with Växjö Lakers, broke a long-standing U20 scoring record, and collected multiple awards during a historic season.

This earlier version of Pettersson remains part of why the reaction to Rosehill’s comments became so strong across hockey circles.
