‘Not Going to Be a Great Fit’ — Kentucky HC Mark Pope Reveals Record for Quickest Recruiting Visit He ‘Cut Short’

Kentucky coach Mark Pope revealed how fast he and his team cut short a potential recruit's visit to the Wildcats' campus.

Kentucky coach Mark Pope has been in the college basketball spotlight after a woeful 22-14 finish to his second season in charge of the Wildcats. The Wildcats’ season ended in an SEC Tournament quarterfinal exit to the Florida Gators and a blowout loss to the Iowa State Cyclones in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In addition, Pope has been widely criticized by Kentucky fans for the Wildcats’ transfer portal activity in an effort to rejuvenate the roster ahead of a pivotal third season in charge.

Mark Pope Reveals Kentucky Prospect Visit Termination

In a clip posted on X on Monday, the beleaguered Pope answered a fan’s question about the fastest timeframe that he and his team have cut short a prospect’s campus visit in Lexington.

“In high-paced portal recruiting, a lot of times, the first time you ever meet a player in person is on their campus visit,” Pope said. “We’ve had a lot of great visits. We’ve had some visits that we’ve cut short. Our record for cutting a visit short was three hours, where we just determined that this was not gonna be a great fit.”

Pope’s Kentucky has recruited five prospects so far, and the Wildcats are ranked No. 12 in 247Sports’ transfer portal rankings, lagging behind heavyweights like the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Pope was roundly criticized after 14 of the top 20-ranked prospects in the transfer portal visited Lexington and none of them committed to the Wildcats. During the Apr. 30 segment of the “Outkick Hot Mic” podcast, college basketball analyst Trey Wallace blamed Pope for Kentucky’s recruitment woes.

“Kentucky has dropped the ball,” Wallace said. “I think once recruits, and I talked to a few people about this, once recruits are getting to campus, these transfer portal players, they’re not connecting with Mark Pope.”

“You can offer all the money in the world, you could have a roster that’s worth $22 million, but if you’re not relating to the coach or the coaching staff, you are not going to get very far. The hard truth for Kentucky is, it’s not like your time is past, but you’re not above everybody anymore. Those days are over.”

Pope is in one of the hottest seats in college basketball, with the results on the court evoking calls for his firing, while the less-than-stellar recruitment angle has only added more pressure on the Kentucky legend to deliver results in his third season after succeeding John Calipari.
