The tumultuous and ever-evolving saga between the New England Patriots head coach and Dianna Russini, a former reporter for The Athletic, doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
The story is growing by the day, with new tidbits of information leaking through various gossip networks. All of which could ultimately create a snowball effect that carries over into the Patriots’ 2026 season.
Massive Scandal Between Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini Continuing to Grow
A whirlwind of consequences has played out following Vrabel and Russini’s alleged affair. Russini decided to step down from her job, while Vrabel, entering his second season as the Patriots’ head coach, attended counseling. He agreed to miss the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft last weekend as a result.
It’s uncharted territory for Vrabel, who has otherwise steered clear of negative headlines during his time as a head coach. He spent six seasons leading the Tennessee Titans, including guiding them to an AFC Championship appearance in 2019 and three consecutive playoff appearances.
He may want to get used to being in the spotlight, however. Not for what he accomplishes in New England, but for his scandalous affair with Russini. In an appearance on Fox Sports Radio on Thursday, former two-time All-Pro linebacker LaVar Arrington indicated that this story isn’t being brushed under the rug in the near future.
“This is a fat hog of a story,” Arrington said. “This is not little piggy, fat hogs get slaughtered. This has so much meat to it, just because scandals carry that type of weight. Relevant scandals, how do you replace that? What are you replacing the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini scandal with? What are you replacing it with? Oh, the season schedule release? Different category.”
“It’s going to be related anytime something is discussed about Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini is immediately going to be brought up, somehow, someway,” he continued. “It’s going to happen.”
Arrington would go on to compare the lingering impact of the affair to Shannon Sharpe’s recent sexual assault allegations. The former Denver Broncos tight end, who won three Super Bowls across a 14-year career, was dropped from the ESPN network after settling a legal case in which he was accused of rape.
Sharpe initially denied the allegations, and a settlement was ultimately reached between both parties following a lengthy legal bout, but the conflict lingered over Sharpe’s reputation for quite some time. Even nearly a year after the settlement, it’s a past that Sharpe won’t be able to outrun.
“He’s [Sharpe] not even married, and all he was doing was talking bad to the girl,” Arrington said. “He was abusive, verbally, but some people said she might’ve liked it. Regardless, it was the perfect storm for a scandal, and it ultimately cost that man his job.”

The affair between Vrabel and Russini, while not that bleak, could hinder the Patriots’ quest for back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Eventually, these matters will become too much of a distraction for any team to endure. “I don’t understand in reality how anyone can think this story is going away anytime soon,” said Arrington.
Before the off-field noise, the Patriots had a strong 2025 offensive campaign. According to the PFSN Offense Impact Metric, New England ranked second in the league with an impact score of 86.6 under Vrabel’s leadership.
