‘He Better F**king Win’ — Shane Gillis Puts Pressure on Marcus Freeman After Sherrone Moore Cost Him SNL Debut

Marcus Freeman has spent the last year balancing the grueling demands of a championship-caliber team with the rising gravity of his own celebrity brand. No moment captured this duality better than his recent, sleek feature in Esquire magazine, a photo spread that served as a stylish reminder that Freeman is currently one of the most marketable figures in sports.

But while the Esquire profile highlighted his potential as a crossover star, it also drew a sharp, unfiltered assessment from one of his biggest supporters, stand-up comedian and Notre Dame superfan Shane Gillis.

What Shane Gillis Expects from Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame

Reflecting on Freeman’s high-fashion turn, Gillis kept his commentary brief and pointed on a recent episode of the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast.

“I thought he looked snazzy,” Gillis said, before quickly pivoting to the stakes. “He better f**king win. He’s doing Esquire. He better win now.”

The numbers suggest Freeman has provided the substance, even if the final trophy is still missing. Following a 2025 season where the Fighting Irish finished 10-2, the team established itself as a national powerhouse. The offense, led by the clinical precision of quarterback C.J. Carr, averaged 42.0 points per game, the second-highest mark in the nation.

Carr’s own development into an elite distributor, finishing with 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns, has provided the necessary on-field production to match the off-field branding.

Defensively, the Irish remained suffocating, allowing only 17.6 points per game. Yet, for Freeman, who has built a brand predicated on winning it all, a 10-2 record that misses the College Football Playoff is a reality he is desperate to transcend.

For Gillis, the Esquire feature is just the latest indicator that Freeman has reached a level of national recognition that few college coaches attain. It was that very cultural currency that nearly landed Freeman a coveted spot on Saturday Night Live.

Gillis revealed that he had been in advanced talks to get Freeman a seat at the Weekend Update desk. “I tried to get him on ‘SNL’ this year. It was close,” he told the hosts.

“We were close to getting it done. We’re going to have him on Weekend Update. And then something happened at the Michigan program that became the biggest story in college football. And so we couldn’t do it for real. It was that week.”

The catastrophic termination of Sherrone Moore for cause following an investigation into an inappropriate relationship with a staff member stirred into a scandal that spiraled into criminal charges, including felony home invasion. The Michigan disaster became the only story in the country, effectively killing the lighthearted news-cycle space required for a Weekend Update cameo.

As Freeman prepares to navigate the 2026 season, the Esquire feature and the near-miss on SNL serve as bookends to a coach who is clearly ready for the brightest lights. But as his most vocal proponent, Shane Gillis, made clear, the runway is set.

The style is there, the media reach is there, and the roster is arguably the most talented in years. The Fighting Irish currently have an 8.7% chance to win the national championship, per PFSN CFB Playoff Meter.
